The past is a mirror of your soul. These words are probably remembered by everyone who has ever played, seen a video, or at least stayed for a while in the menu of Messenger of Death, which is considered one of the most important Czech games, and even the best Czech adventure game ever. The horror title from the studio Unknown Identity and Future Games was released in 2003 as their second venture, which, like their predecessor Messenger of the Gods, stirred up the Czech waters of the then prevailing humor genre. The messenger of death is still very popular, not only here, but it is possible that he still hasn’t said the last word – at least his music will return, but there is also a brand new part in preparation, a spin-off, which, if created, could bear the subtitle Blood Bond.
Despite its age – the game will celebrate 21 years since its release in March – the Messenger of Death has not been forgotten. The first part is available on Steam, including the popular Czech dubbing. Along with it, there are also the sequels Messenger of Death II and Messenger of Death III from 2009 and 2011, which, however, were no longer worked on by the original developers, which also applies to the not very well-received reboot of Black Mirror from 2017. The story of the Messenger of Death has thus not only seen a reopening and further closure, but also a completely new concept. However, a brand new project from one of the original authors intends to explore what happened long before. However, the return of the Messenger of Death is not just like that, so the new story will first be preceded by a return to the original game through music. And other adventure games from the studio Unknown Identity and Future Games, respectively those on which one of the original creators and members of the studio worked, will also receive this care. Both companies went out of business years ago, but not everyone decided to leave games and the gaming industry.
Zdeněk Houb, one of the authors of the games Messenger of the Gods, Messenger of Death and Ni.Bi.Ru: Messenger of the Gods, their scripts or complete soundtracks, decided to return to his soundtracks after more than 20 years. And so the idea was born to remaster all the music he composed during his time at the studio and making games. Even if the Messenger of Death himself occupies a prominent place, he did not neglect other projects, starting with the very first game in the unofficial messenger trilogy, but also later adventure games. “I think that the messenger still has a lot of fans, so I thought that for the anniversary he deserves to change the music into a new, appropriate jacket. And why not add music from all our other adventure games? Exactly! That’s why I started remastering all the songs,” he said about the Houb project, for which he will be asking for support as part of the Hithit campaign. So, in addition to the Messenger of Death, it will also include the remastered music of the game Messenger of the Gods from 1998, remake Ni.Bi.Ru: Messenger of the Gods from 2005, Reprobates from 2007 and the last act Another self from 2011.
The campaign for the creation of the remastered soundtrack is scheduled to start on February 19, and supporters can look forward to the release of these tracks on two CDs in addition to the reward of the new versions of the soundtrack themselves in digital form. That way they cover the whole thing a cross-section of music by Zdenek Houba and an adventure game by Unknown Identity, i.e. Future Games, but they will also be supplemented by other bonuses and rewards depending on the amount of the contribution. However, all fans of the Messenger of Death should be on their guard, as this musical return may be a precursor to the already mentioned brand new installment. The music remaster will also serve to establish interest in the game after so many years, and later it should be followed by a campaign for the new game. The fate and origin of the title Messenger of Death: Bond of Blood is still unclear, but the plans are definitely here. And from what I’ve already had the honor to learn, I can say that they are definitely engaging and ambitious. So let’s hope both projects succeed.
