“Maria Armfeig”: Kulturhaus Royal shows comedy classics from young Swiss films

The film is considered a contemporary document of Baden’s cultural scene in the 1970s. In mid-October it will be shown at the Royal in the presence of the filmmaker.

In May 1980, filmmaker Sigi Meyer premiered his first work “Maria Armfeig” at the Royal Baden, as the city writes. The strip is a fictional portrait of the Baden artist Giuseppe Reichmuth, who gained fame as the painter of “Zurich in the Ice Age”.

In addition to Reichmuth, who played himself, regional amateur actors and actors from Theater Claque also took part in the film. The film largely takes place in Baden.

Although it was made without a large budget, it enjoyed national fame even years after its premiere. In August 1985 the NZZ wrote: “In the still barren karst landscape of the ‘young’ Swiss film, the delicate plant of film comedy usually only blooms tentatively. In addition to Rolf Lyssy’s films (including ‘The Swiss Makers’, editor’s note), one might also think of an outsider production like Sigi Meier’s ‘Maria Armfeig’.”

In what context did Maria Armfeig emerge? And what role did Baden’s cultural scene play at the time? The Kulturhaus Royal and the Baden Historical Museum will explore these questions on October 18th – at a revival of the film in the presence of the director Sigi Meier and the artist Giuseppe Reichmuth.

After the film, the contemporary witnesses and Baden cultural figures Brigitta Luisa Merki and Christoph Baumann as well as the cultural anthropologist Edith Werffeli talk about this time in Baden and the zeitgeist of the time. At the time, the choreographer Brigitta Luisa Merki was a member of the musical theater collective “Jerry Dental Kollekdoof” and sang with Giuseppe Reichmuth on the alternative stage of the theater maker and composer Ruedi Häusermann. The musician Christoph Baumann was involved as a pianist in the making of the film “Maria Armfeig”. The conversation will be moderated by journalist Esther Schneider.

The reason for the event is the handover of the film to the Baden City Archives. It takes the film as a contemporary document of the late 1970s, as the city says. (the)
