The rock group “Bezvējš” had been listened to casually before, but they hadn’t thought they would come to release an entire album, however – here it is! “” Bezvējš “is one of the newest melodic rock groups in Latvia, performing songs only in Latvian, thus continuing the succession of Latvian rock music. The group’s first studio album was created over the course of several years, with the composition of the band changing in the middle and looking for the right sound for each of the songs, rewriting them several times, polishing them and bringing them to perfection, “states the album application.
“Fantastic day for listeners of Latvian melodic rock – finally” Bezvējš “- finally! – releases his debut album. In my opinion, they have such a great album, in my opinion, a real rarity these days,” said Féliks ĶiĶelis , who was warmed up by this Liepāja rock band during his tours, to the author of these lines in a Facebook voice message. Such a message was reason enough to ask about this band (and their released album) in a little more detail.
The group “Bezvējš” is made up of singer Māris Lūkins, guitarists Māris Smiltenieks and Andris Grīntāls, bassist Raitis Lagzdiņš and drummer Kristiāns Riekstiņš. The new album includes ten rock tracks (plus intros), the music of which is composed by Māris Smiltenieks, Māris Minkevics and Fēlikss ĶiĶelis, while the lyrics are written by Elmārs Smiltenieks. The songs were recorded in several recording studios with sound engineers Gati Gaujeniek, Edija GĆedovski and Kārli Šteinmanis, the latter of whom also gave the overall sound of the album by producing it.
PAR. A pleasant surprise on the melodic front of heavy rock! Obviously “Saknes” is Félix ĆiĶelis II, but in this case it is more a sign of quality. First of all, we must highlight superb pieces like “Tie bez seja” (listen to the words!) And “Vētra nāk”, which explode in the ears from the first listen and which can already be safely placed in the golden bottom of Liepaja rock. Impressive “Saknes” with the participation of the choir, also recommended the songs “Mēs esam” (excellent solo guitar parts) and “Klaidoņi” (just like “Melnā princese” from the times of ĆiĶelis and the young people of Grodum), while the fans of the more lyrical side of Felix will probably like “Rock and Roll with the wind”. In summary: “Bezvējš” is a respectable continuation of the Liepāja heavy rock traditions in its best manifestations.
VERSUS. It is incomprehensible how you can name a group with such a stupid name, which, moreover, absolutely does not match its musical image – this is definitely not a calm breeze! Putting aside this subjective dislike of the name, which previously largely prevented us from paying attention to the work of this blitz, we must admit that its main drawback is the lack of originality: “Bezvejš” is so “kigelish” that it does feel like checking your home audio library and better hear the original itself (Feliksu ħiģeli) and not “Roots”. The singer sometimes can’t do it alone, so in the most basic songs (even the aforementioned “Faceless Ones”) he should have helpers. Furthermore, the lyrics are sometimes naive in their patriotism.
