Revised recommendations on Covid-19 booster vaccines issued by WHO

The international organization only considers them necessary for “high-risk” people, once every six or 12 months.

Experts from the World Health Organization who study the behavior of the coronavirus in different parts of the world issued a series of recommendations in the last few hours, among which are to stop applying reinforcements to the entire population and only apply annual vaccines to people high-risk”.

With the new recommendation, booster doses should be allocated every six to twelve months to the elderly, immunocompromised and health workers, indicates the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Vaccines (SAGE).

“It is a reflection that a large part of the population is already vaccinated, has been infected with covid-19, or both at the same time,” he said. Hanna Nohynekpresident of SAGE as published by EFE.

For people at medium risk of covid-19 (adults under 60 years of age and children or adolescents with certain health problems), SAGE only recommends a first full dose (two applications) of the vaccine plus another booster after the necessary period ( something that in many countries has already been completed in 2022).

In the low-risk group (children and adolescents) SAGE recognizes the benefits that vaccines and booster doses can have in their prevention, although it recommends reconsidering their immunization.

However, Nohynek noted that “each country should consider its specific context when deciding whether to continue vaccinating low-risk groups such as healthy children and adolescents, while not compromising other crucial immunizations.”

Among the new recommendations is that of applying a booster anticovid dose six months or more after the previous one to pregnant women.

It should be noted that the national Ministry of Health has not yet ruled on these new recommendations.
