The Irish Times reviews four limited release movies. “Ann” is a restrained and sensitive portrayal of the tragic day in 1984 when Ann Lovett died after giving birth alone in a grotto, directed by Ciaran Creagh. “Rodeo,” a feminist biker flick, offers a thrilling detour through the underground subculture of cross-bitume (stunt bike riding) in greater Paris, directed by Lola Quivoron, and anchored by an excellent performance from newcomer Julie Ledru. “Little Richard: I Am Everything” is a fascinating and original documentary on the pioneering music and outrageous persona of Richard Wayne Penniman, who the doc argues was bound up with both his religious fervour and queerness. And finally, “Castro’s Spies” is an excellent Irish documentary on the lengthy espionage battle between the US and Cuba, directed by Ollie Aslin and Gary Lennon, that takes a balanced approach to its tangled subject matter.
