The International Automobile Federation (FIA) is reviewing the punishment for Lewis Hamilton, the Mercedes driver, after he crossed the track during the race, without permission, during the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix last week, amid fears that the punishment was not harsh enough.
The seven-time world champion collided with his Mercedes teammate, George Russell, at the first corner of the Losail Circuit, causing his car to slide into the gravel outside the circuit and cross the track to return to the pit area.
According to Reuters, the British driver was censured and fined 50,000 euros ($52,545,000), with half the amount suspended for the rest of the season, on the condition that this does not happen again.
The International Federation said on Sunday that it was “reconsidering” the incident.
He added, in a statement: “The FIA notes that Lewis apologized during the subsequent hearing with race stewards and acknowledged that the crossing was a serious safety violation. However, given that he is a role model, the FIA is concerned about the impression his actions may leave on young drivers.”
The supervisors’ report at the time said that Hamilton reached the inner edge of the track, just seconds before Russell arrived at high speed, after leaving the pits.
