Review Voice of Love: Unofficial biography of Céline Dion presents the career, joys and secrets of the most famous Canadian singer

„My Heart Will Go On“

The biographical films of famous musicians have been a small terno in recent years, which, thanks to the huge success of the recent Bohemian Rhapsody, are more often given the green light by the producers. After Freddie Mercury and last year’s Rocketman, Voice of Love comes in, a film loosely inspired by the life and career of the phenomenal singer Céline Dion, which will present the French Film Festival as part of its 24th year. However, free inspiration is quite an exaggeration, the fascination with the singer is performed by the director, screenwriter and at the same time the protagonist. Valerie Lemercier really know.

The story follows the path of the girl Aline, the fourteenth child of Sylvette and Anglomard Dieu. Aline has shown her unique talent since childhood, performing at smaller events around a Canadian town where she grows up with her family. At the age of 12, Aline notices record manager Guy-Claude, who helps her start her career. The following is a special description of the story of the most famous Canadian singer, who colorfully shows both the peak of her career and the most difficult moments of Alina, resp. Celina’s life.

It is the relationship between Aline and Guy-Claude that grows from a purely professional to an intimate one after Alina’s victory in Eurovision that is the focus of a more than two-hour biography. And it is also the most interesting life component of the singer, who gave birth to 2 children to a real manager, René Angeleli, who is 26 years older.

The strongest component is life performance Valerie Lemercier. But the strongest component is life performance Valerie Lemercier. Aline is an inconspicuous, untidy, timid girl from the village that the viewer barely notices. Over the course of her career, she has become a confident superstar, disarming not only spectators in stadiums but also in halls. She perceives and carefully processes this change in dramaturgy, the protagonist absorbs it and transfers it to the screen in an intense, magnificent way. Aline’s singing is practically flawless, with the real Céline we probably wouldn’t put them side by side, but the performance is really respectable.

Aline’s singing performance is so respectable that the audience will wonder why there are so many music scenes in the film, and at the same time so insufficient. A quantum of songs, both adapted and directly from Céline’s discography, appears on the screen, but the direction unnecessarily cuts them down for as short a time as possible. From the phenomenal My Heart Will Go On, undoubtedly the most famous song by Dion, it remains on the screen for less than 30 seconds, which is in contrast to the atmosphere that Lemercier can build during the performance, desperately little. Rock fans of the singer’s work will not be pleased even by the absence of some hits such as It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.

The director intentionally changed the singer’s name, alter-ego literally means “Aline goddess.” And as a goddess, Aline introduces us. Human, loving, passionate, stubborn and confident. A star that has never forgotten its beginnings, and its family, despite its world-famous knowledge, remained in the first place. It is so characteristic that the film comes out at a time when the singer can be discovered by a generation for whom her music has long meant the past. And maybe it also works as a small promo – Céline Dion is to return to the Czech Republic in 2022 after 12 years.
