Review: TWA Hotel, New York JFK

The TWA Hotel emerged from the former Trans World Airlines flight center and opened in 2019. The impressive 1960s building was equipped with over 500 hotel rooms and offers overnight guests, among other , several cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as conference rooms, a gym and a swimming pool overlooking the forecourt.

The design and furnishings have been meticulously thought out and crafted in detail. A visit to the exclusive TWA Hotel is therefore on the wish list of many aviation enthusiasts and frequent flyers. We made this dream come true and stayed at the only hotel directly in New York’s huge JFK airport.

TWA Hotel, New York JFK | Lage & Check-In

The only hotel on the airport site is connected to JetBlue Terminal 5 and is accessible by plane from all other terminals. The access is very well signposted, in all areas you will find trendy signs or stickers on floors and walls.

The building is unmistakable, and when you enter the lobby, you immediately feel transported back to the 60s thanks to the design, furnishings and the ever-looping swing music.

Official check in is 4pm, I was there a good hour early and received my key card within two minutes (at no extra cost).

TWA Hotel, New York JFK | Lobby

On the way to the room I had to stop several times and admire the many details.

The restored departure board is an eye-catcher.

The main hall was flooded with light thanks to the good weather.

Opposite the reception is the 24-hour dining room, there is also a gift shop.

The uniforms of the former crews are on display on the upper floor.

In many corners, various seating options invite you to linger.

The seating area in the dining room isn’t particularly attractive by comparison, coffees or cocktails are more pleasant to sip elsewhere. Here are more impressions:

The rooms are located in two long wings off the lobby.

TWA offers multiple categories ranging from standard to deluxe, from executive to various suites.

Depending on the orientation, you have a view of the hotel building, terminal or apron.

The style and charm of the house can also be felt in the rooms.

The room was not very big, but I had enough space on my own. The decor is stylish and functional, with plenty of charging options, good WiFi, a rotary phone, and a large TV (no CRT, sorry).

Standard rooms have a closet instead of a wardrobe and only a little space for luggage. Safe and steamer are still available.

The bathroom is a bit unspectacular, but there are some TWA design cues here as well.

TWA Hotel, New York JFK | Pool

The rooftop swimming pool is a must for visitors, from here you are very close to the airport apron and can sunbathe, splash around or eat and drink.

In the winter season (November to the end of May) admission is free for hotel guests, in the summer they have to pay $25, and outside visitors pay $50.

The pool bar spreads the cabin atmosphere and offers the right cocktails or small plates at relatively normal prices.

The pool is heated, there is a fire pit in the tent so you can handle it quite well even in cooler weather.

The next morning I had the pool to myself.

TWA Hotel, New York JFK | Other structures

In addition to the Food Hall, hungry and thirsty guests can also use other restaurants and bars. In addition to the upstairs pool bar, there is a lobby bar, the Paris Cafe or the Sunken Lounge.

A Lockheed Constellation has become the Connie Cocktail Lounge. There’s also a huge fitness center where non-residents can sign up and work out.

Naturally, the TWA branding is also found here in several places.

TWA Hotel, New York JFK | Frankfurt Flyer Comment

It was very funny! My expectations weren’t exactly high either, I was expecting a relatively standard US hotel experience. The conversion of the TWA Flight Center into a hotel was very successful for the manufacturers, who showed great attention to detail. The charm of the sixties immediately catches the eye, a walk in the atrium seems like a little time travel.

The downside is the high price for accommodation and all additional costs and additional services. The food hall is available 24 hours, but you shouldn’t expect good quality there. There was a false alarm in the evening, most of the guests then left the room. But the smoke-free doors couldn’t be opened right away, everyone had to wait over an hour in the lobby, some barefoot and in pajamas. Any compensation or small compensation in the form of vouchers, free drinks or the like was refused.

The positive outweighs the positive but I clearly won’t be forgetting this stay any time soon. Another plus is the proximity to the terminals, the hotel is good enough for a stopover. But you should bring some time with you to be able to enjoy the feeling, whereby an overnight stay is completely sufficient.
