REVIEW. ‘Tiger King 2’: “Wilder and more marginal, but the fun is gone” | Viewing guide

TVIf a cat has nine lives, you can imagine a tiger king not laying down his head in one, two, three either. Netflix seems convinced that the profit margin of the wildly successful true-crime series ‘Tiger King’ has not yet been fully exploited and is coming up with a sequel to the most talked about documentary of 2020. What are the latest developments in tiger country? And whether a cat is even interested in that? Evelien Delgouffe is looking for it our Viewing Guide out for you.

Netflix doesn’t hide much in the opening seconds of the second season itself: The reason ‘Tiger King’ became a worldwide sensation and was parodied on all possible social media channels is because ‘Tiger King’ was released on March 20, 2020 and we our shit bored. Because we were all caged like luxury tigers ourselves by a well-known pandemic. The fact that it’s one of the most outlandish documentaries we ever thought possible comes in second place.

Season 1 of ‘Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness’ introduced us to the wild world of Joe Exotic, his private zoo full of dangerous felines, his entourage and also arch-rivals. The series was a runaway fairground ride that featured a portrait of an extravagant cat freak and his wild plans for fame and his “nemesis” Carole Baskin – who wasn’t too keen on Joe’s fraudulent business with her big cat sanctuary. understood – thus outdoing. However, things took a strange turn when it suddenly turned out that Joe had put a target on Baskin and that he would have paid money to get rid of “that bitch” for good. It caused the FBI to open an investigation into Joe Exotic, which resulted in the bleached cowboy going to jail before the series went on air. Not one day has he been able to taste his fame as a free man. And that will not change soon, because he is currently serving a prison sentence of no less than 22 years.

What about a second series? A lot, it turns out. Not only is Joe Exotic back at the party – albeit via phone calls from prison – you simply can’t prepare for the number of new reveals, new plot twists and new characters headed your way.

After the worldwide success of the first series, all the key figures have become famous in one way or another and they are trying to convert that newfound fame into dollars as quickly as possible. Joe’s husband Dillon is so busy marketing anal bleach that he hasn’t had time to plead Joe out of jail, let alone pay him a visit.

In addition, with the help of new witnesses, we learn that in the distant past, Joe was the youngest police commissioner ever in Texas and during that time he was also engaged to a single mother with whom he maintained a sexless relationship, while he ” went stripping for the mayor and her friends at night behind her back to raise money to buy a new fire truck. When he finally came out, he was bullied and taunted by police forces in other districts and several suicide attempts before Joe lost his heart to Brian, a man who kept Joe on the straight and narrow for 16 years before he died. died in Joe’s arms from the effects of AIDS. According to close friends, that’s when Joe turned into a manipulative, narcissistic monster who decided to film every moment of his life in the hopes of becoming famous and even US President.

Not to be missed: Joe’s former business partner Jeff Lowe, a man named Eric Love who wants to exonerate Joe by getting a presidential pardon and Carole Baskin, who is once again forced to declare her innocence over whether or not her first husband is killed in cold blood.

To the question whether ‘Tiger King’ can captivate with this second season, we answer with a resounding ‘yes’. Wilder than this is true crime rarely if ever. But it will no longer be a hype like the first season. The new is gone and to be honest, so is the fun. It’s as if the rosy film had been ripped from our eyes and we’re beginning to see that this sequence is pure junk wrapped in dull misery. The chance that we will secretly crawl under the sheets with our iPad and see how this whole circus continues to blow itself up is not non-existent, but for the time being we are going to look for another pastime during teleworking this year.

Streams or ships?

Skip anyway. ‘Tiger King’ remains an extraordinarily bizarre and gritty documentary where the plot only continues to thicken, but anyone who has watched the first season in one go can live without the fuss of season 2.

Our judgment?
