Changing a formula to the extreme, executing it fantastically, and making it a standard to be pursued by other games is an award and achievement that is even more magnificent than just the Game of the Year trophy they managed to get from an award event like The Game Awards. though. That’s right, we are certainly talking about what Nintendo managed to achieve with the Breath of the Wild formula a few years ago. No wonder the anticipation is so strong and crazy for the latest series which is positioned as a sequel – Tears of the Kingdom which is finally available on the market. A series that is no less fantastic.
First Impressions
The fact that this game succeeded in “forcing” us to re-issue preview articles which are usually released due to the predictably long review process seems to be a standard testimony of what kind of experience The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom manages to offer. Indeed, there are familiar sensations that flow from the world and some mechanics that are maintained from the previous series, but in the end, Tears of the Kingdom will immediately draw you to the same conclusion – that this is an adventure that is bigger, grander, crazier, and ultimately, requires you to expend all of your logical energy.
Starting with a plot that is heavy and immediately provides strong motivation for you to return to exploring Hyrule which is back in shambles after efforts to recover from the previous conflict, Nintendo also immediately injects you with a variety of new powers which are of course focused on one thing – facilitating creativity and logic. You can combine various objects to build their own functions, smelt weapons to make them more lethal, reverse the movement time of an object, so that it soars through the ceiling.
All these new powers, as you can predict, are also “solutions” for so many new shrines and puzzles. The good news? As with Breath of the Wild, the solution isn’t just locked into what Nintendo wants it to be. As long as you have some creativity and logical thinking action, this game will still allow your personal solutions to happen. It’s an approach that we fell in love with in Breath of the Wild due to its physics system, and it’s a relief that this has been maintained and even expanded on in these Tears of the Kingdom.
One of the most surprising parts of at least the first 20 hours of Tears of the Kingdom’s first session is the fact that Hyrule’s vertical breadth is simply unbelievable. On the one hand, you meet the Hyrule land that you have known so far, of course, with locations that are still familiar but are now faced with new dynamics. Up in the sky, you’ll find a wide swath of Sky Islands to explore, which even come with their own boss challenges and puzzles. Not enough? It turns out that Hyrule now also has a super-large dungeon called “The Depths” and several wells that also contain super-wide areas, with different challenges in them. The fact that you can jump from the clouds and enter “The Depths” without even a loading time still amazes us, especially considering that it runs on a machine “as old” as the Nintendo Switch.
We ourselves cannot guarantee when our review will come out with so many adventures that still await us and promise us an epic experience on it. There are so many side missions waiting, villagers to save, materials to collect, buildings to concoct, weapons to smelt, and in the end – Zelda to save. But there is one thing we can guarantee for now, that this will be one of the best games you can enjoy in 2023.
