Review: Super Meat Boy Forever

Then Super Meat Boy Released in 2010, it was a breath of fresh air in the video game world, as platform games were often tricky, but not quite as tricky as this game. In 2017 Super Meat Boy Forever announced and after regular postponements we can finally get started with the game. Read our review of the sequel to this popular game here.

For strangers with the series: Super Meat Boy and also this sequel are rock-hard platform games that require very precise movements to reach the end. There are enough obstacles that kill you, so you can start over. So it is mainly a matter of trying, trying and trying. When you reach the end, it is mainly the satisfaction that reigns. There are some worlds with different new hordes, each with a final boss, which is true in this part.

There are again plenty of nods to classic video games, which is a delight for enthusiasts. The graphic style feels like a polished version of the previous part and essentially the game seems to be more of the same, something we would welcome.

Unfortunately it is in Super Meat Boy Forever slightly different, because this time you only control the characters in actions, not movements. You cannot adjust your speed or change direction unless you hit a wall. So it is an auto-runner as we know it from Bit.Trip.Run of Cabalt. A genre that has already become very outdated, so we noticed that the tight controls that made the original game so popular, shines here in its absence.

It regularly happened that we fully pressed the jump button, sometimes several times, but our lump of meat did not move much. Because you have no control over your movements, other than diving, jumping or attacking in any of these actions, it feels more than ever that you have been left to the gods. At the same time, this ensures that you have to pay less attention to your movements, but only have to think about good timing.

There is also no restart button, so starting a level again requires several actions. This was overlooked in the beginning of this genre, but has become such a loss that it quickly becomes frustrating that such a thing has not been implemented.

All in all Super Meat Boy Forever unfortunately an ode to that one cool game from ten years ago, but forget to process the elements that made the first part so great. It therefore feels a bit like a mediocre game made for mobile devices with a popular character to sell it. It is a shame that the success formula of the previous game has been abandoned in such a way as to be left with a simplified derivation of the cult game. We would have given the game one more star if it was a unique game of its own and not leaning on a game whose name cannot live up to it. Even then it unfortunately does not know much to do.

For this review, Super Meat Boy Forever was played on the Nintendo Switch. The game is also available for a limited time only for this console and PC through the Epic Store and will come to Xbox, PlayStation and Steam later in 2021.
