Review: Spider-Man: Homeless – A Thorough Analysis

After Avengers: Endgame, Marvel brings another climactic event where the reaction to the past is as important as the present.

This review is with SPOILERY. If you want to read the commentary on the film without spoilers, we have your first impressions and we also dedicated the section without spoilers in our podcast.

Spider-Man: Homeless arrived in cinemas with a difficult starting position. In a year when big movies in theaters (largely due to a pandemic) did not do so well. About two years after the last big “event” was released in theaters Star Wars) and even longer after the last Great MarvelSpider-Man: Far from home, therefore Avengers: Endgame). The Internet was full of spoilers, there was talk that the film could be a starring role for the characters Take hollanda last.

So the expectations were high and with the number of characters known in advance, I was personally afraid that the film would be overpaid, or that it would be one big relief to the fans, without emphasizing the story itself. Although in the end this may be partly true, at the same time, from my point of view, it is true that the film did not fall apart under the pile of ornaments and can concentrate on what is important.

In fact, I was almost surprised how personal the film is in the end and how it is still the story of an uncertain high school student. At the end of the previous film, when Spider-Man’s identity was broken by Mysterio, there was no hide-and-seek game with the police. Such a story might be interesting, but it is far more interesting when life seems to run “normally”, but previous events are fundamentally written into it.

I would be able to watch the whole film about the impact of such a revelation on a young teenager, because it is simply nutritious. The story inevitably goes to the arms of spells and spells, because Peter’s goodness comes to the surface here when he doesn’t want others to suffer because of him.

And we won’t make up for yourself, Dr. Strange’s participation (Benedict Cumberbatch) is primarily used to bring the older Spider-Many and some of their villains into the film. This is supposed to be a big film event that wants to amaze the audience with the influx of popular spider elements and bathe them in nostalgia. It works.

Goblinovi (Willem Dafoe) a Octopusovi (Alfred Molina) of the other Spider-Man opponents, perhaps only Vulture could be equal (and only thanks to Keaton and his excellent scene in the car). He is therefore extremely grateful to the audience that his top villains are back for the culmination of one Spider-Man era. Octopus shows off its various aspects, the Goblin is a devilish nightmare orc, ready to summon hell on Earth. Other older negatives are just obstacles to action scenes (Sandman, Lizard) or a voice machine (Electro), but that doesn’t deny the central two’s expressiveness.

Fights with various villains are fun and varied, they are perfectly complemented by an “interdimensional” fight with Doctor Strang, and the final event at the Statue of Liberty is the real culmination of the film, as we watch three different Spider-Many work together to help each other against the bad guys. .

The fan’s heart beats when the old acquaintances reappear on the screen after years, but in addition, there are a lot of links, messages and funny moments, which show how the gentlemen are similar or how they differ. It’s not just that we look at our favorite faces. Even if Peter Parkery from foreign dimensions did not play the original actors (Tobey Maugire, Andrew Garfield), their performance would still have weight from a story point of view.

When Peter (Holland) does not want to eliminate dangerous villains, but wants to help them, it may be quite naive, but it is also moral, and a young boy who “has gained great responsibility” naturally fits such an attitude. And the moment he is broken after Aunt May’s death, at the bottom and questions his approach, then there are two more experienced Spider-Mans to show him that even with heavy wounds he can be lifted, and that following his own moral compass is for individuals positive.

Although the film jumps from event to event, it presents various attractions and interesting concepts for future films, but it never loses its focus on what is essential. That is, the characters and their nature. Peter is a distracted high school student. It is important for him not to hurt anyone, outside of difficult times he is excited about superhero life and thanks to the three child heroes in the heart of the film (Peter, MJ – zendaya, Ned – Jacob Batalon) the narrative is carried in a properly mischievous spirit. This is not a depressing tragedy. There is hope behind every inconvenience.

Perhaps the film would blame the fact that the side negatives like Lizard have little space. But does it really matter? In a number of superhero films, it is usually the case that the hero has to make his way to the “main boss” through a number of henchmen. In this case, they are simply not anonymous hooves, but less interesting spider villains from older films. Certainly also Spider-Man: Homeless at a really honest point of view, it is not optimally prepared, like a separate film. Much of the viewing experience depends on being multiple Marvel film and several Spider-Man films.

It depends on how many previous pictures you saw and what you remember from them. A substantial piece of pleasure from “Without home” stands for nostalgia. But I don’t have a problem with that personally either. I am a fan and I look at the picture with such eyes. And given the attendance of Spider-Man and Marvel, it is clear that in this particular case, the creators could afford to rely on the fact that most spectators do not go to the cinema unkissed. It is possible that on repeated viewing, the magic of nostalgia will fade and the occasional helix of the film will come to the surface, but this is a problem of my future self at the moment.

If I really have to criticize anything, I’ll admit that Tobey Maguire didn’t suit me very well. Maybe it’s his age, maybe he hasn’t recorded much in recent years, but Andrew Garfield was far more natural next to him. And Aunt May’s death didn’t work for me at all (Marisa Tomei). It seemed to me like a jigsaw puzzle that the screenwriters desperately needed to continue telling the story they set out to do. It certainly can’t be said that the death of Peter’s last living relative would make me sad. On the other hand, there are moments in the film that are stronger. Whether it’s MJ Garfield’s rescue of Spider-Man (who lost his beloved himself) or Peter’s final victim, which gets even stronger when he looks at the patch on MJ’s forehead and learns that he just doesn’t want to put her at risk again and completely he cuts off from everything he has ever known.

Verdict

Lots of fun, whether thanks to humor or successful action. Despite the number of characters, there is never any confusion and all key figures are given plenty of space. He never looks away from the emotional core of the film, which features Peter and his loved ones. The return of the old Spider-Man and the negative is a nostalgic bomb. And the door to other interesting spider stories is wide open, without in any way hampering the current storytelling. So yes, this spider movie clearly succeeded.
