Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has had a rocky start. While films like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” have performed well at the box office, the critical acclaim that Marvel Studios is known for seems to be waning among fans. However, the first Disney+ series of this phase, Secret Invasion, seeks to bring back beloved characters and plot elements from previous films while setting the stage for new heroes and villains.
The six-episode limited series stars Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as Nick Fury. Having seen the first two chapters, it is clear that Secret Invasion takes on a tone closer to Captain America: The Winter Soldier than a large-scale action blockbuster. It leans more towards being an espionage thriller, focusing on human characters rather than superheroes themselves. Even without many costumed heroes on screen, the series still references characters like Carol Danvers and The Avengers, highlighting Fury’s relationship with the Skrull people after the events of Captain Marvel.
An Intriguing Storyline
Continuing from the plot elements established in “Captain Marvel,” Secret Invasion revolves around Talos, the Skrull leader played by Ben Mendelsohn. While only the first two episodes were available for review, it is evident that this series sets itself apart from previous MCU projects. The storytelling takes a more mature approach, delving into the lives of human characters we have grown familiar with over the past fifteen years.
The narrative swiftly introduces the conflict between Talos and Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), who seek different paths for the Skrull people on Earth. When Fury learns of this impending threat through Talos and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), he returns to Earth after spending years aboard the S.W.O.R.D. space station, S.A.B.E.R. With the help of his friends and skilled MI6 agent Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Colman), Fury must thwart Gravik’s plans and rescue Talos’ daughter, Gi’ah (Emilia Clarke). The ensuing chase scenes and detective work set against the backdrop of Moscow lead to events that could push the world towards World War III.
Secret Invasion cleverly plants hints and teases throughout the opening episodes, creating anticipation for what lies ahead. Fans well-versed in Marvel Comics will be thrilled by the promise of a major adversary connected to the Skrulls.
Talented Cast & Different Visual Palette
The cast of Secret Invasion delivers strong performances. Samuel L. Jackson’s portrayal of Nick Fury shows a different side of the character, one altered by his experiences during Thanos’ snap and his time with the Skrull people. Ben Mendelsohn shines as Talos, further exploring his complexities beyond what we saw in Captain Marvel. Olivia Colman impresses as the efficient yet ruthless Sonya Falsworth, while Emilia Clarke surprises viewers with her gritty performance as Gi’ah. Kingsley Ben-Adir brings a menacing presence to Gravik, providing a solid antagonist for Fury.
Directed entirely by Ali Selim, known for his work in television, documentaries, and commercials, Secret Invasion offers a different visual experience compared to other MCU productions. While sharing some similarities in tone with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, this series exudes a more immediate and confined feel. The story primarily unfolds within backrooms and interiors, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of Selim’s inspirations such as The Third Man and FX series The Americans.
A New Direction for the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Secret Invasion follows a weekly release format on Disney+, which may frustrate viewers who prefer binge-watching. Each episode feels like a part of a larger movie rather than a standalone piece, aligning with previous comparisons made by Kevin Feige and the creative teams behind these Disney+ series. A better assessment of Secret Invasion can be made once the entire tale is seen from start to finish, but the opening episodes already demonstrate a more mature and well-structured approach than recent Marvel films and shows.
