The cake was after three seasons Emphasis according to director Frank Ketelaar. A fourth season of the series with Barry Atsma, Jacob Derwig and Georgina Verbaan is therefore no longer possible. But the series does end with a feature film. NU.nl lists the reviews from the Dutch newspapers.
NRC – 3 stars
“A new audience will Clamp: the movie not tap into, but for regular viewers this epilogue is an unnecessary and pleasant reunion with the beloved antiheroes. In his script, Ketelaar (…) skilfully plays with the prejudices that exist on both sides: the Italians think the Dutch are blunt stubborn, the Dutch company immediately sees a mafioso in every Mediterranean type. She is forgiven that the makers have to pull a lot of rabbits out of the hat in the last ten minutes to complete all the plots.
de Volkskrant – 3 stars
“A feature film often requires a very different tension and dynamics than a series, and the plot of Emphasis is definitely not the strongest point. The actors are still comfortable in their roles, but it helps if you’ve seen the series. And the film searches for tone and style a bit wobbly, curiously enough, something the series itself has always been very accurate at. There are even some of those eternal romcom elements, something that Dutch cinema is slowly going under – talk about being stuck.”
Loyal – 3 stars
“A strategic chess game between the ‘cheese heads’ and an Italian who preys on the winery, in which the explanatory dialogues are given more space than the build-up of tension. Frank Ketelaar, also creator of the series, emphatically shows sausages and sharp knives: looks threatening, but little is done with it. The local garage owner who just doesn’t get around to repairing Hugo’s car? Handy for the plot, but it could have been given a more dynamic part in the power struggle.”
“Yet has Emphasis, except for a fine group of actors reprising their previous roles, something to offer: an enlivening of our vocabulary with exotic swear words. ‘Flower bulb cock’. ‘Nick-ticklers’.”
De Telegraaf – 2 stars
“Where the series Emphasis with its colorful characters and many plot twists on television, the feature film, directed by Frank Ketelaar himself, shoots Emphasis: Manners Olandesi however shortage. On the silver screen it is striking how caricatured his character sketches actually are here. In addition, the accumulation of ridiculous actions by its main characters and the sometimes far-fetched dialogues undermine the credibility of this crime thriller. It offers old wine in new bottles, but of a considerably lesser year.”
AD – 3 stars
“That it refuses to get exciting has everything to do with the origin of Emphasis. Ketelaar does not just throw the events from his series finale in the blunt. You therefore do not believe for a second that someone’s life is actually in danger. It’s a bonus for the fans. A tasty movie dessert that, once eaten, leads to a predictable conclusion: the cake was indeed already finished.”
