With the Reno4 Pro 5G, OPPO shows that it has a lot to offer. The Reno4 is a feast for the eyes, which takes photo and video recording to the next level.

The smartphone brand OPPO may not ring a bell with everyone yet. Because although the Chinese company has been making its mark internationally for many years, the brand only recently entered the Belgian market. The brand wants to do that with style, because after the flagship Find X Pro, OPPO launched the Reno4 Series on October 1, the first really ‘big’ launch for our country. The Reno4 is in a slightly lower price range than the Find X2 (although a cost of 799 euros is still not nothing), but according to OPPO, this smartphone can put its foot next to it in terms of experience. We get our hands on the Reno4 Pro 5G, the most luxurious variant of the Reno4. And the device quickly convinced us.

The Rainbow

If you put down 799 euros for a smartphone, you want that class to radiate. So does the OPPO Reno4. The first thing you notice when you take the smartphone out of the box is how light it is. Overall, the smartphone is only 7.6mm thick and weighs 172 grams. Due to the curved screen edges, the smartphone feels very comfortable in your hand, something that we had a little less with the Find X2 Pro due to its enormous size. But the OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G especially impresses with its finish on the back. Both the Galactic Blueedition we had, as the Space Black- in Green Glittercolor have a special rainbow tone in the finish, which has been processed with a special diamond cut technique. You may find that less beautiful, you cannot argue about personal taste, but it is not only for show. The finish also ensures that the smartphone is much less sensitive to scratches and fingerprints. The camera island protrudes a bit, putting a cover around the smartphone is recommended when you put it down. A bit of a shame, because beyond this detail, the smartphone is a feast for the eyes. You should not look for a connection for headphones. If you want a premium smartphone, you should also include wireless earphones. A trend that we as consumers will have to follow.

We are also positive about the display itself. The combination of a 6.5 ”display with a refresh rate of 90Hz provides a pleasant experience when watching videos or playing games. You may safely note here that there are smartphones in the same price range with a refresh rate of 120Hz such as the OnePlus 8T, but in practice that difference is less as it appears on paper. The finger scanner is also built into the display, and just like the face recognition, it works fine and also very fast.

OPPO Reno4 has a beautiful finish.

Recharge in an instant

Then we come to the points that really set Reno4 Pro 5G apart from the competition. There is nothing more annoying than getting up in the morning and discovering that you forgot to charge your battery. Thanks to the revolutionary 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging technology, this problem is definitely a thing of the past. In almost literally a few moments, the battery of your smartphone is fully charged again: you can jump from 0% to a fully charged battery in less than 40 minutes. Plug in your phone in the morning and you can continue for a full day. Much better for your energy consumption at home! If you do run out of battery, you can activate the Super Power saving mode. In this energy-efficient mode, you can still use the last 5% for 1.5 hours. You really do not have to look at your battery level (it is also not visible on the display, which is not very useful).

Film like a director

Then we got the cameras, something that a smartphone stands or falls with these days. Camera islands are starting to look more and more spectacular, but OPPO Reno4 Pro keeps it quite austere with three cameras in that regard. Quality over quantity is the motto, because the different cameras have a lot to offer. We go over the list for a moment: a 48MP main camera, a 12MP wide-angle video camera and a 13MP telephoto lens. The cameras are amplified with LDAF camera sensors. Just discovering and trying out all the different camera options will keep you busy for a full day. One of the most striking to me is the night mode. The Ultra Night Mode is one of the better night modes that I have already taken pictures with myself. The AI of this filter will provide your photos with artificial light, so that you can capture objects and people beautifully even in little to no daylight. The Ultra Dark Mode ensures that the beautiful and mysterious of the dark is extra accentuated. Those who like to go out at night to portray city life, will be able to indulge endlessly with the OPPO Reno4 Pro 5G. In addition, the smartphone also has a very strong portrait mode, which makes close-ups look very stylish. Recommended to use it in combination with the 32MP selfie camera to take warm selfies. That camera has sensors that follow your face so that you are always central in the photo !!

With the Reno4 Pro 5G, OPPO is also focusing more than ever on video recording. The cameras are equipped in such a way that you can take images that even Steven Spielberg would be jealous of. Okay, maybe not just yet, but trust us that you will look back with pride at your own video recordings. The IMX708 sensor provides bright colors at night and increases light sensitivity. Just like for taking photos, the OPPO Reno4 is a smartphone that starts to excel when other smartphones start to give up. But also during the day, the exposure is optimized by enabling the HDR video algorithm. Another clever feat is the image stabilization. With the Ultra Steady Video (Pro) mode you can record movements and action images without noticing any shocks. Ideal for sports competitions, for example. You can even experience this effect by simply moving your smartphone around during filming. You will see how the image barely shrinks despite all the shocks. Do you want to add special effects after recording? This is possible with the pre-installed Soloop app, and simple video editing software that requires no prior knowledge. Let your creativity run free.

ColorOS is getting better

One last point we spend on the general user experience of the OPPO Reno4 Pro. The engine is the powerful Snapdragon 765G processor, which ensures 5G support. With that processor, the smartphone works very smoothly: apps falter almost never, and swiping and scrolling feels nice. The operating system is called ColorOS 7.2, a derivative of Android 10. ColorOS used to be a limited operating system, but with the latest version ColorOS 7, OPPO has made great strides. A nice handy feature is the pre-charge function. The smartphone keeps track of which apps you use the most and optimizes the loading time for these apps. Yet it is a pity that OPPO has not yet taken the step to Android 11 for the Reno4 Series. It still gives the impression that the smartphone is a bit behind the rest, although it can also be an advantage to put the update to Android 11 only when the first growing pains have disappeared.

Verdict

We want to forgive that OPPO, because the Reno4 certainly managed to convince us. Those who use their smartphone as a camera will not be able to enjoy themselves with all the features that you can try out. We are convinced that even after three weeks we have still not discovered everything. But even if you are less involved with film, with OPPO Reno4 you get a beautiful and technically advanced device. It will not be long before the Belgian consumer knows who OPPO is.
