Big surprise at the mayoral election in Starnberg on March 15th: challenger Patrick Janik becomes the new town hall chief. Right at the first attempt, the joint candidate from the CSU, UWG / Free Voters, SPD and Bürgerliste achieved an absolute majority with 51.7 percent of the votes. Incumbent Eva John (BMS, WPS), on the other hand, comes in second with just 28.5 percent. Green candidate Kerstin Täubner-Benicke achieved 15.1 percent, FDP applicant Marc Fiedler 4.7 percent. The turnout is 59.5 percent.
Hardly anyone expected this clear election result in the run-up to the elections. As in 2002, 2008 and 2014, a runoff election was expected. Even Janik is surprised that the result after counting the 36 electoral districts is so clearly in favor of the challenger: The 44-year-old lawyer, who takes over the office at the beginning of May, celebrates his success on election day at home with his wife and sister-in-law. “It’s a vote of confidence in my hometown,” says Janik.
The previous incumbent congratulates Janik via email. She explains that the result, which was disappointing for her, was not entirely unexpected, but gives no political reasons for her clear defeat. Instead, John, who has been called Pfister since they were married a few months later, complains in particular about a “campaign that has been going on for almost three years and was designed to discredit me as a person and First Mayor and to prevent re-election.” She herself looks back on “six instructive years” and a “successful work for the city of Starnberg and its citizens” as mayor. John remains on the city council as the BMS parliamentary group chairman and takes over the department for “integrated social planning”. The revision of their disciplinary action at the Administrative Court is pending; the public prosecutor’s office had lodged this in the first instance because of the judgment that was too mild in their opinion.
