Rob is not very impressed by the action movie à la Takenas he describes it. “As for that, we know the type of story.” So you don’t have to go to the movie for the plot. Nor for Rico’s acting skills. “He especially looks very difficult. That is also his character,” Rob answers when asked whether the brand new actor has a bit of text. “They told him: keep it small, keep it small. That will work.”
Rico, who also partly financed the film, has made no secret in recent years that he dreams of a big film role. He is already gaining experience with smaller roles in, for example Undercoverbut at Black Lotus everything revolves around him.
The film may not be too good, but Rob does admire Rico’s perseverance. “It’s just his calling card for Hollywood. And he managed to do something in which his acting performance wasn’t the worst. But whether that’s a compliment to the film … I don’t know.”
Rob therefore does not expect major directors from the US to call Rico flat in the near future. “I don’t think this is the launch of his big Hollywood career, but I do think he had a lot of fun,” said Rob, who still has an idea for people who Black Lotus go see.
“I think it’s a good movie for drinking games,” he suggests. “That you have to guess what will happen next. Or that you have to look for mistakes in the film, and if you spot one, the other has to take a shot. Then you get very drunk.” For example, Rico, who plays a police officer, does not follow the correct rules in the film and uses outdated terms such as ‘medic‘ when he calls for help – something that is no longer used today and dates back to World War II.
