It’s a little pearl of the festival that this Portrait of the Artist as an Ornamental Hermit by the Belgian Patrick Corillon, who presents his delicate miniatures to us at the chapel of the White Penitents. A great storyteller and visual artist, he unfolds his stories while deploying his notebooks, brings cats and forests to life by unfolding his drawings like a pop-up book. He takes us on his imaginary journeys, like the Russian poet Ossip Mandelstam deported to Siberia, who told stories to his fellow prisoners, bringing to life, against all odds, his mini-theatre on the prison floor. With generosity, the artist shares with us his love of words and languages, whose origins he invents, French, language of the rivers (which give their name to a large number of departments), English of stones, Portuguese flowers, so many whimsical ramblings. On leaving, we stay on cloud nine for a moment.

“Portrait of the artist…”, until July 12, chapel of the White Penitents, festival-avignon.com. And also on July 14 at the Maison Jean Vilar, at noon by reservation (free), maisonjeanvilar.org. Patrick Corillon’s animated films are shown at the Utopia cinema on Tuesday 11 and Thursday 13 at 4 p.m.
