Review of Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti Super and 4080 Super: Performance, Prices, and Comparisons

The case has advertising links that provide VG with income. The editors prioritize independently of this

At Tek you will find cases with advertisement links, where you can either buy the products we have mentioned or compare prices. We believe this is relevant information for our readers.

Which products Tek will write about, and what we will write about them, is chosen by the journalists and no one else. But it is also important that you know that if you click on such an ad link for price comparison at Prisjakt, or buy a product after clicking through to a store from one of our articles, Tek makes money. These advertisement links are always marked with “ad link”.

It is important to emphasize that when we mention products at Tek, it is because we think it is journalistically interesting. No one can buy publicity in our cases.

In tests or product guides, the main rule in VG is that we buy or borrow the product. If it is not practically possible, we base the review on product samples we have been sent. If so, we will inform you about which product and why.

A super waiting sausage, we called the first of Nvidia’s three new Super cards in the RTX 40 series. It delivered so well that it can be a good buy for several people, which we have not meant for many cards this generation.

Now they are more expensive RTX 4070 The Super (from DKK 10,400) and RTX 4080 Super (from NOK 13,000) launched. Does it make sense to add one of these to the cart?

Compared to the 4070 Ti, the new Super variant has 4 GB of additional video memory. This brings the total up to a more respectable 16 GB, and together with greater memory bandwidth makes this card more future-proof for gaming at higher resolutions. 10 percent more graphics cores should also pull in the right direction.

The news is fewer with the RTX 4080 Super, which replaces the current 4080 model. The Super model is primarily NOK 2,000–3,000 cheaper than the “original”, which was criticized for being overpriced. We should also see a small performance increase, thanks to 5 percent more graphics cores and a slightly higher clock frequency. Together, that should make the card more relevant for those of you who play in 4K resolution, but don’t want to empty your account completely for the boss card in the series.

For the RTX 4070 Ti Super, we have unfortunately been sent a model from MSI, “Ventus 3X”, which it turns out is not for sale in Norway. The performance and several other characteristics will nevertheless be similar to those of other cards in the series. The RTX 4080 Super “Founders Edition” is sold directly from Nvidia and should be well known to most people.

PS: Complete performance measurements and specifications are at the bottom of the case!

That’s how well the Super cards perform

With an average performance of around 140 FPS at 1440p resolution, and 80 FPS at 4K resolution with all graphics settings at max, the RTX 4070 Ti Super is a pretty versatile card.

We are nevertheless disappointed by the performance increase from the 4070 Ti, of just over 4 percent. Far below what the specifications could give the impression of.

With 167 and 99 FPS respectively at 1440p and 4K resolution, the RTX 4080 Super performs so well that it can handle all games regardless of resolution. Here, however, the disappointment lies in the fact that in practice it performs the same as the card it takes over from. We find around a 2 percent increase, if we squint at our graphs. The don’t you notice in game!

However, the point of the 4080 Super is not that it should be that much faster. It is much cheaper, and thus gives more bang for the buck than its predecessor. Moreover, it takes over – by a hair’s breadth – the position of the world’s second most powerful graphics card from AMD’s RX 7900 XTX.

Better than AMD on new technologies

Like other Nvidia cards, the 4070 Ti Super and RTX 4080 Super are better choices for ray-tracing gaming than AMD’s rivals, which are primarily troublesome competitors in raster-based titles.

The Nvidia cards’ DLSS upscaling is also a notch more powerful than AMD’s FSR upscaling, and Nvidia has – at least so far – support for image generation (called Frame Generation) in far more games than AMD.

The effects of all this can easily be seen in our measurements below. Nvidia is still clearly the best when it comes to “new technologies”, so it may be that the Super series doesn’t make such a huge impact compared to its predecessors.

Higher performance for the money

What the new Super range mainly does is offer more for the money. The 4070 Ti Super does it by increasing performance and video memory, while the 4080 Super ensures it by drastically cutting the price.

It gives us cards that are better investments than the one-year-old “originals”, and this especially applies to the 4080 Super. It delivers as good raster performance as AMD’s top card RX 7900 XTX, and far better in games with new techniques, without being much more expensive. The extra thousand is easy to defend.

Much the same can be said for the 4070 Ti Super, which costs the same as AMD’s next best, the RX 7900 XT. Although AMD still has a slight raster-based lead here, the ray tracing, upscaling and image generation performance make Nvidia’s contender a better buy for the vast majority.

More and more games make use of one or more of these techniques that provide higher realism or performance, and most things being equal, it’s easy to point out which one you should choose.

The Nvidia RTX 4080 Super Founders Edition is based on the same cooler and design as its big brother RTX 4090. It produces little noise and low temperatures. But check that you have room for the card, it’s big!

Camera Anders Brattensborg Smedsrud / Tek.no

Super efficient

The performance alone is enough for us to single out both Super cards as better candidates than AMD’s RX 7900 duo. The fact that the cards are also much more energy efficient and require less power overall is the cherry on top.

In addition to lower electricity bills, it also makes the cards a little easier to insert into machines without the most powerful and expensive power supplies. You should get away with an efficient 700-750 watt power supply for the 4080 Super, and 650-700 watts for the 4070 Ti Super.

The cards are also well cooled and make very little noise. For the 4070 Ti Super, we recommend third-party cards with three fans rather than the compact and weaker cooled ones with only two. Otherwise, notice how Nvidia’s Founders Edition card is in a class of its own when it comes to noise and temperatures compared to AMD’s reference design for the RX 7900 series.

Conclusion: RTX 4080 Super

Camera Anders Brattensborg Smedsrud / Tek.no

Many have, rightly, been unhappy with Nvidia’s offering to enthusiastic PC gamers this generation. There has been far too great a price difference between the 4070 and 4080 series to defend the latter. This has particularly created challenges for you with a 4K screen, because at such a high resolution you need one of the two most powerful cards in practice to really let loose in all games.

With the 4080 Super, Nvidia goes a long way to solving the challenge. It’s still an expensive graphics card, but finally makes sense for more than the well-advised who don’t feel any need to make a smart purchase in terms of money as well.

The card provides around 15 percent higher performance for the money than its predecessor, takes 2nd place on the list of the world’s most powerful graphics cards, and delivers tremendously much better than AMD’s rival in games with new techniques such as ray tracing, upscaling or image generation.

Nvidia’s Founders Edition is also an impressive construction in itself, with a massive cooler that ensures low noise and a design that is a wonderful counterbalance to several third-party manufacturers’ flashier cards.

If you have a powerful enough power supply, play on a 4K screen and need to upgrade the machine now – a year before the RTX 50 series arrives – it has become a much easier choice to make than just a couple of months ago.

Conclusion: RTX 4070 Ti Super

We are disappointed with the performance increase the RTX 4070 Ti Super has shown us over the 4070 Ti. Just under four percent on average is not much to brag about, but we simply cannot get the card to perform better even after several rounds of testing and double-checking (read: post-testing) of its predecessor. The specifications point more in the direction of a 10 percent performance increase, so we keep the door open to the possibility that some of our measurements, or something with the test model, won’t quite work out.

This may explain why the card doesn’t beat AMD’s much cheaper rival, the RX 7900 XT, in raster performance.

But, there is no question of the big gap there, and it is also time to add more importance to the performance with techniques such as ray tracing, upscaling and image generation. Most new “AAA” games use one or more of these to deliver increased realism or greatly improved performance today. With good effect. Here you should note how Nvidia’s cards are many heads ahead of AMD’s.

More video memory makes the card much more forward-looking than its predecessor. When the price hasn’t become that much higher, we can’t avoid highlighting the 4070 Ti Super as a fairly solid graphics card. Especially for you with a fast 1440p screen.

It is so powerful that you can play many new, heavy titles in 4K resolution as well. But then with slightly lower graphics settings if you want to maintain a good and smooth image flow. Competitive FPS games such as Overwatch, Call of Duty and similar will flow like butter anyway. This is good to know if you choose to upgrade to a 4K screen after you have bought the card.

NOTE: The model we have tested from MSI cannot be bought in Norway, but if you stick to a design with the same form factor, you will probably be satisfied with the cooling and the noise level.
