What Is the Film About?

‘Family Star’ centers around the life of Govardhan (Vijay Deverakonda), who shoulders the responsibility of managing a joint family. The film uncovers the challenges faced by the family due to Govardhan’s older brother and explores how the wealthy entrepreneur Indu (Mrunal Thakur) enters his life. Performance and Casting

In the role of Govardhan, Vijay Deverakonda convincingly portrays a character burdened by responsibility. Deverakonda’s controlled and realistic portrayal proves his finesse as an actor, effortlessly depicting a relatable character.

Mrunal Thakur, as Indu, initially impresses but gradually loses her charm, particularly in the latter half of the film, where her character is reduced to sporadic, emotionless appearances. The lack of chemistry between Vijay and Mrunal is a missed opportunity.

Analysis

‘Family Star’ is Parasuram’s second collaboration with Vijay Deverakonda after their previous hit film, ‘Geetha Govindam.’ However, this time, Parasuram fails to deliver a compelling storyline and engaging conflicts. The plot seems aged and the conflicts lack depth, leaving the audience questioning the choices made during the production.

Performances by Other Actors

The supporting cast, despite their established reputations, fail to make a lasting impression in ‘Family Star.’ Even the talented Jagapathi Babu and Vennela Kishore are restricted to predictable and uninspiring roles. Other cast members, including Divyansha Kaushik, Ajay Ghosh, Prabhas Sreenu, and Jabardasth Ramprasad, make limited impact, while renowned actress Rohini Hattangadi is underutilized and Vasuki’s potential remains untapped.

Music and Other Departments

Gopisundar’s music is a major letdown, failing to enhance the overall experience. KU Mohanan’s cinematography falls short, lacking a fresh and visually appealing aesthetic. Marthand K. Venkatesh’s editing is inconsistent, resulting in unnecessary scenes that disrupt the flow of the film.

Highlights and Drawbacks

Highlights of the film include a subtle underlying message and a few well-crafted dialogues. However, the film is weighed down by the presence of an age-old plot, weak conflicts, an unsatisfying second half, subpar music, and cringe-worthy American episodes.

The Verdict

While the first half of ‘Family Star’ manages to hold the audience’s attention, the second half leaves much to be desired. Director Parasuram’s lack of clarity and a strong storyline lead to a disappointing viewing experience. Approach the film with the right expectations.
