Review of Burger Street Festival in Valtice: Prices and Food Options

REPORT: PrahaIN.cz visited the Burger Street Festival in Valtice at the weekend. Even the scorching heat didn’t attract people, and there were crowds at Náměstí Svobody. There were queues at the stalls, the benches were occupied. And the prices? We are already used to them, but we were surprised that in most stalls it was not possible to pay by credit card. The burgers were excellent, but for the price of around two hundred, we might have expected them to be a little bigger.

The Burger Festival is the largest traveling street food event in the Czech Republic, it has more than ten years of tradition and boasts more than a quarter of a million visitors every year. This year, he will visit 25 cities, in some places he will even appear twice. For example in Brno. The festival is now slightly past its halfway point. There are still stops in Mladá Boleslav, Pilsen, Hodonín, Prostějov, České Budějovice, Liberec, Pardubice, Brno, Olomouc and Frýdek – Místek.

The festival did not go to Prague, the closest from the capital was Kladno.

We only found out that the festival was taking place in Valtice when we arrived in town. Originally, the plan was to visit the castle and castle park and spend the evening in the wine cellar. However, when we noticed the hustle and bustle of the place on Saturday afternoon, we set out as well.

There were several stands with burgers, but those who wanted to try something else had the opportunity. Corn dogs, fried potato chips and insect specialties were sold here. There were also stalls with sweet treats.

The burgers could have been bigger

We were interested in JJ Grill Bill, which offered several types of burgers. They ranged in price around two hundred crowns. The Spicy burger cost 180 crowns, the Bacon burger 190, and the Alpin burger just two hundred.

The most expensive was the JJ burger. It cost 220 crowns, and in addition to aged beef, it consisted of cheddar, bacon, egg, caramelized onion, lettuce, tomato and cucumber. Most of the burgers were displayed, so the customer could choose the one that was most pleasing to his eye.

People stood in lines and immediately bit into the delicious burgers. We haven’t heard anyone complain about the price. It was only repeatedly mentioned that the burger could be bigger.

Another stall offered wine. Deci Svatovavřinecký rosé from the Lahofer winery cost 30 crowns, as did Müller Thurgau. There was also a wide range of sparkling wine to choose from, the cheapest costing 40 crowns, the most expensive 75 crowns. Exactly 0.15 liters of Chandon Garden Spritz cost 115 crowns. Half a liter of water 35 crowns.

There was less traffic at the corn dog stand. It is a sausage on a wooden stick, which is wrapped in a cornmeal batter and fried, sometimes mozzarella is used instead of sausage. Both versions cost 120 crowns in Valtice. Various sauces, onions and peppers were included.

We also came across the FriesFactory french fries stand. But not many people stopped here at the time of our visit either. One portion cost one hundred crowns, those who had cheese added to it, paid an additional 40 crowns.

Diners were discouraged by the heat

We noticed a family who watched for a while but ended up not ordering fries. We asked why. “I won’t get fries for 140 crowns, I’d rather pay a little extra and have a hamburger,” said the man.

This image was quite common. People stopped, looked at the price and left without ordering.

Apparently the biggest queue was for drinks. We would say the prices were average. A small pilsner beer cost 45 crowns, a large one 65 crowns. Raspberries up to 0.3 went for 35 crowns, half a liter ten crowns more. Cans of lemonade cost 35 crowns. As well as Toma brand waters. Fruit juices cost 45 crowns.

We didn’t find a single fault at the festival. Maybe it’s just that we would enjoy it more and certainly eat more if it were a few degrees cooler.

Admission to the event was free.
