Review of Apple Vision Pro: The Ultimate Experience in Audiovisual Technology

Vision Pro actual machine.By the way, the 256GB storage model costs $3,499.

I am sending you the second day of my Apple Vision Pro (hereinafter referred to as Vision Pro) purchase diary.

Click here for the first time.

Since this magazine is “AV Watch”, there are many people who are interested in audio visuals. Of course, I also focus on this aspect when purchasing.

This time, while preparing to return home from the hotel, I watched a movie on the plane.

Furthermore, the Vision Pro does not have a “technical standard conformity certification” specified under the Radio Law for use in Japan. For this reason, appropriate considerations are being taken when using such equipment, including the use of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ “special system for experiments using equipment that has not obtained technical certification.”

Additionally, Vision Pro is currently only sold in the American market. Therefore, in order to use it, you will “basically” need an Apple ID issued for the United States.

Strictly speaking, you can use an Apple ID for Japan to just set up the device, but you can’t use the AppStore for Vision Pro unless you have an ID for the United States. You can use a Japanese ID for content on Apple TV+ and Apple Music, but for purchases etc., you will need an American ID, just like with the App Store.

Therefore, in articles related to Vision Pro, including this article, we use “Apple ID issued in the United States” unless otherwise specified. This is the reason why “Currently, its use in Japan is not recommended,” including questions that are not compatible with Japanese and technical standards.

However, it is a very valuable product, so please read it as a reference when it is released for Japan in the future.

A “separate audiovisual experience” that can be felt through photos and spatial videos

When I experienced Vision Pro last June, I was greatly shocked by the “audio-visual experience.” Anyway, I enjoy watching movies and photos.

The visual resolution is high and there are no dots, so you can enjoy it as if you were viewing a close-up photo in the real world.

Since I came to Hawaii, I took a lot of photos and spatial (3D) videos with my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I saw them and they’re really nice.

Experience photos and spatial videos taken with iPhone with Vision Pro

The playback quality of the spatial video may be particularly difficult to understand, as the photos in the article do not allow you to experience the space as a space. In the case of Vision Pro, the surroundings of the video are slightly blurred. In fact, this also makes it easier to see.

As I briefly introduced in the previous article, you can also display so-called panoramic photos. Panoramic photos taken with an iPhone are best. The image quality and sense of reality are quite good.

Compared to sunglasses-type displays and VR HMDs…

However, it is now possible to watch on sunglass-shaped displays such as XREAL Air and Viture One, and VR HMDs (head-mounted displays) such as Meta Quest 3, making it possible to “enjoy memories in 3D.” Honestly, if you compare them in terms of “what they can do,” there isn’t much of a difference, so it’s an exaggeration to say “what Vision Pro can do.”

That said, the Vision Pro is still a different experience.

It’s not just about good image quality. Whether it’s the experience of placing images or videos in a space, the natural darkening of the surroundings when images or videos begin to play, or the naturalness of playing a spatial video, we’ve made improvements that include considerations for the OS. The accumulation of “small ingenuity” makes the experience exceptionally comfortable.

Furthermore, photos and videos can be automatically shared from other devices linked with Apple ID, such as iPhones, to the Photos app, and data such as images can be easily transferred between devices using AirDrop. The ability to interact with others is also an experiential advantage over other platforms.

You can also send images from your iPhone to Vision Pro and vice versa. It’s easy because of AirDrop, Apple’s unified environment.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Vision Pro’s goodness comes from the fact that it incorporates everything that Apple has accumulated over the years all at once.

On the flip side, it also loses some of its appeal for people outside of Apple’s ecosystem.

We also enjoyed a movie on the plane. On the flight to Hawaii, she watched a movie using the XREAL Air 2 Pro, but on the way back she decided to use the Vision Pro.

The difference between the two is clear. A sunglasses-type display like the XREAL Air 2 Pro is easier when it comes to covering your face, weight relative to your head, and appearance. And surprisingly, the image quality is also quite good. 3D movies aside, I am very satisfied with 2D movies.

Condition when using XREAL Air 2 Pro. After all, this one has the advantage in terms of naturalness and ease when using Vision Pro.It’s still a bit exaggerated and I’m still not used to seeing it.

On the other hand, it may come as a surprise, but Vision Pro wins when it comes to maneuvering on airplanes.

In the case of a sunglasses-type display, you will inevitably need to use the “connected body” for operation. Therefore, I have to keep it on my lap all the time, which is a nuisance. It’s also difficult to operate. Also, if you use it for a long time while it is plugged in, you will need more cables.

Connect XREAL Air 2 Pro to iPad mini. It’s simple, but having a separate device to operate is a pain. And if you use it by connecting it to a power source, you will need two more cables etc.

Vision Pro also has complicated cables, but there is no device to operate it, and you don’t have to touch the battery or power supply once you connect it. It’s surprisingly simple.

For Vision Pro. It’s actually surprisingly simple.Even if you connect an external power supply, you only need more cables and power supplies here.

An overwhelming movie watching experience.Especially 3D movies are the best

What about the image quality of movies?

As mentioned above, videos are properly distributed from the Apple Store, including content from Apple TV+. As before, distribution of 2D works compatible with 4K and HDR, as well as 3D works in the case of the United States, has begun.

Apple TV also starts distributing 3D movies and more for Vision Prom

In addition, Amazon Prime Video, Disney + distribution apps, NBA distribution apps, etc. are also available, and it is clear that “video is one of the main attractions” from the beginning.

This time, I mainly experienced it on Apple TV and Disney+. I watch content for Apple TV that was paid for with an American ID, but I was able to watch Disney+ as is with a Japanese account.

It can also be viewed on Disney+.You can watch 3D movies even from a Japanese account.

The image quality is simply excellent.

The element of viewing images on a large screen can also be done with other HMDs or sunglasses-type displays. Everything was evolving and I thought it wasn’t a bad experience.

However, the Vision Pro goes far beyond that. Although it has the disadvantages of weight and pressure on the face, it is comparable to the big screen experience of a good TV or projector.

3D movies are especially amazing.

You can have a much better 3D experience than watching it in a movie theater or on a 3D TV.

PlayStation VR “1” had a Blu-ray 3D playback function. Personally, I have always felt that 3D movies viewed in that environment have the best quality.

However, the experience with Vision Pro easily exceeds that. The technical constraints of Blu-ray 3D resolution and PSVR1 resolution suddenly changed with the advent of Vision Pro, which uses distribution and high-resolution panels. Although there are still restrictions on the amount of content, it does have the latest high-quality content. What’s more, although Disney+ is limited to content from the same group, you can also watch 3D content at no additional charge as part of your subscription. 3D versions of previously purchased content on Apple TV will also be added for free.

This is irresistible for fans who also like 3D movies.

Past HMDs have been lacking in efforts to deliver video. To be precise, there was a strong tendency to leave it to other companies. However, in the case of Apple, since it is in the distribution business and has a deep relationship with the Disney Group, it has been working very seriously from the beginning.

Unfortunately, due to copyright protection, content such as movies cannot be captured as it is displayed. It will be “blacked out”.

Even if you capture while watching copyright-protected content, it will only result in a “black frame” like this.

The image is similar to the video from the 13th second of Apple’s official PV. With past AR devices, the image of such images was so far removed from reality that it almost looked like “PV fraud,” but Vision Pro’s images are almost exactly as they are.

When watching videos or photos, there is a process that automatically darkens the surroundings other than the image, but when watching movies, etc., using the “theater” background makes the situation even darker and more immersive.

“Theater” background. It’s probably hard to tell because the video part is black, but you’ll see a simple room like a screening room with no chairs. It’s too hard to see, so this image has been slightly brightened so you can see the floor.

This environment is basically provided by Apple and is made entirely of 3D objects. So it’s frighteningly real. You can work or watch movies in scenery around the world, including the lunar surface, but when it comes to movies, it’s called a “theater,” and it’s a theater that’s set up specifically for movie playback.

With Vision Pro, it is also possible to use “Environments” as a background instead of a see-through landscape. Made in 3D and very realistic

Furthermore, Disney+ also has special backgrounds available. You can watch movies inside exclusive Disney+ theaters, Avengers Tower, and Tatooine.

You can also watch movies at the Avengers Tower, which has the image of being a dedicated theater for Disney+.

These dedicated theaters automatically transform into darkness when a screening begins.

It’s hard to tell because the content section is black, but this is a screen shot while watching a movie at Avengers Tower. The surrounding area has become dark at night

Enjoy movies on the plane

As I was examining these points, it was getting closer to my time to return home, so I decided to enjoy the rest of the movie on the plane.

Enjoy movies with Vision Pro on board

Both Apple TV content and Disney+ content can be downloaded to the device and enjoyed in-flight. Of course, there are also 3D works.

Download and watch 3D movies on Disney+

So what does it look like? It looks like the image below.

Screen being played. Can you give us an idea of the display size etc.

You can clearly see the image in the air, just like when you are watching it in your room. The size and display position can be changed almost freely. The size and distance of the images are also quite natural.

Amazingly, even when the plane starts moving, the video doesn’t shake at all. It becomes more stable when you set it to “travel mode” for use in a vehicle.

If you are in a moving vehicle such as an airplane, turn on Travel Mode.

The built-in speakers have very good sound quality, but they also leak a lot of sound, so you’ll need to wear headphones on the plane. This time, we have prepared AirPods Max and 2nd generation AirPods Pro (USB-C model). The latter is said to be compatible with the new lossless high-resolution connection, but to be honest, I don’t really understand the difference. I’d like to test it some more later. This time I enjoyed it with AirPods Max. The sound quality is sufficient.

I used AirPods Max to play sound.

When it gets dark during flight, it becomes difficult to see your surroundings. Even with see-through, the image quality is so poor that you can’t see the cabin attendant’s face.

Even though the inside of the plane is dark, it looks like it’s mostly dark, but there’s actually a flight attendant in front of you.darker than the naked eye

In fact, when this happens, the sensors that recognize hands and surrounding conditions also become less effective. It was a bit of a blind spot. However, I can still use it to watch movies.

While looking at the smartphone in hand (bottom, black and white text), try playing X (formerly Twitter) in Vision Pro.I can’t see my surroundings because it’s dark, but I can read my smartphone screen without any problems.

Some major apps are missing

Despite reports, YouTube and Netflix do not have apps available. With Vision Pro, you can use not only the dedicated app but also the iPhone/iPad app as is, but for both of these, I have turned off the option to use not only the dedicated app for Vision Pro but also the option to use the iPad app with Vision Pro. “It’s not provided.”

That doesn’t mean you can’t use those services; you can watch from the web. However, you cannot watch videos in VR180 format that are published on YouTube, and in the case of Netflix, there is a restriction that you cannot download and watch videos. I would like both companies to consider releasing the iPad version of the app as is.

Furthermore, in the sense of “no apps,” there is also a lack of e-book apps. Specifically, I don’t have a Kindle. Since it is aimed at the American market, there are no Japanese comic apps. Apple Books is available though.

This is also an area where improvements are needed.

Utilizing Foveated Rendering to achieve both “experienced image quality” and “performance”

Lastly, let’s add some technical information regarding image quality.

The Vision Pro has a very high resolution display. In terms of specs, each eye is assigned a resolution of nearly 4K. Furthermore, high-precision rendering is performed, so the display is extremely beautiful.

However, beauty is not simply because the resolution is high. Adopting “Foveated Rendering” which lowers the resolution around the visual field and reduces the computational load, it maintains performance and displays images in a state that is “beautiful and without any dropped frames.” Noda. This technique is used in many HMDs, but is particularly effective for devices with gaze recognition.

The next screen shows an enlarged view of the center and periphery of the field of view. If you look closely at the screenshots, you can see that the resolution is quite different, but it’s hardly noticeable when you’re actually using it.

Look at the previous image again. If you look closely, you can see that there are clear parts and not-so-clear parts. The clear part in the center of the field of view is the same area, and the unclear part at the top of the screen.Although the image quality is this much different, the person using it doesn’t notice it, and it doesn’t really matter.

Of course. This also affects AV quality.
