Review Karel: The celebratory documentary avoids problematic topics and prefers to show what is preferred

An intimate confession of a legend at the end of life.

A year after the postponement of the premiere, the audience has finally seen it! A highly anticipated documentary that maps the career of one of the greatest Czech singers has hit cinema films. It happens two years after the end of this legend named Karel Gott. She provided the direction, script and camera Olga Malířová Špátováthat managed to penetrate the privacy of this family.

Viewers will also have the opportunity to look into his daily life and get to know him from another level – as a painter and a loving father with common worries. The filmmaker filmed with the famous artist for a whole year. Karel Gott follows in his own footsteps into the past to places that played a very important role in his life. We will learn more about his years of study, the beginnings of his singing career or his collaboration with Jiří Suchý, Jiří Šlitr and the Štaidl brothers. The singer himself speaks openly with a typical perspective and humor about various topics. Viewers will also have the opportunity to look into his daily life and get to know him from another level – as a painter and a loving father with common worries.

As for the composition of individual shots, there is not much to blame. The creator managed to supplement the singer’s statement with archival materials – either photographs or videos. In addition, these are not so well-known records, which was certainly not easy to achieve due to the number of documents already created about this person.

On the other hand, some important moments are noticeably missing in the film. For example, there is no daughter Dominika at all (although due to her own efforts). The collaboration with Karel Svoboda is not discussed in more detail, although most of his hits come from him. And the nearly twenty-year period after the revolution is also just a matter of hop.

The author treads around some sensitive topics so easily. However, it is understandable that when the family put their trust in it, they could not go into detail in everything. Specifically, we are talking about, for example, the approach to the communist regime and the like. Although Karel Gott has always had a good relationship with Marta Kubišová, as soon as the viewer sees them sitting next to each other, the comparison cannot be avoided. However, silencing such talents for any reason should be considered almost a sin.

Other situations from the past are also indicated, from which the singer does not always come out completely flatteringly. He often talks about them himself, which is appreciated. He explains, for example, why he didn’t need to settle down before, even though he already had children. His life seemed like one big party. He began to enjoy the pleasures of the family background in full sips until old age.

The creators chose such a way of processing that the work does not seem like a pathos. Because of this, he deliberately avoids deeper emotional outbursts of almost all actors. It is definitely a good thing that he is not trying to flood the viewer at all costs with negative emotions. Just because Karel Gott always left behind mainly the positive ones, so it would go against his lifelong work. However, some moments then look too depersonalized. Who can keep calm when his loved one is facing serious health problems?

Like many other documents, this one tries to capture someone’s life as faithfully as possible. However, this is not entirely possible, especially when someone has experienced so much. It is always just a certain section with an emphasis on preferred events, and so it is in this case. The film will provide an intimate look, especially into the late years of the life of the artist, who until recently was the most popular Czech singer. Although he walks around some delicate topics from his past, he only walks lightly. And a sensitive selection of individual images is evident so that no one is unnecessarily embarrassed – especially when it comes to emotions. Almost every well-known song that is heard strokes the soul, because it represents something so familiar to almost everyone. Despite minor imperfections, this is a respectable act reminiscent of one great era of a huge legend.
