REVIEW: Jaromír Nohavica up to the marrow

That it is a natural return to one’s own roots is also documented by the fact that there are not only new songs on the album. Nohavica was included by the elderly Moniko, Staré dobré časy, Vlci, Píseň pro VV, Řady or Zestárli jsme By the way, with some adjustments in the arrangements, he just dusted off the truth about the timelessness of his songs. And which of his younger fans would have no idea who VV is in the above-mentioned composition, then it is the Russian singer Vladimír Vysocký, who was a great inspiration to Nohavic.

However, it is natural to want new songs, especially new songs, especially if he has not slowed down in their quality in the past. There may be too many looking back on one new album.

Old age and youth

Although the Moravian singer decided in the songs for chamber accompaniment, the album is not monotonous, as the statement of this fact could evoke. Nohavica is an essential melodic, and so basically every song, after it has passed (as it was in previous years), remains in the listener’s head. The fact that the next one usually lags her a bit suggests that this is a balanced collection, which does not come with a section that would in any way slow down the songwriting ride.

Nohavica is not very optimistic in his lyrics. In the title Mom gave me the key to the neck, she copes with the departure of her mother, in the song Emil P. remembers without much emphasis on his usual lyric poetry of his deceased friend, in Monica for long-time love, balances in the Old Good Times or We grow old love, in Songs for VV and Day Hate Night again reminds of your favorite poets.

He respects his age, separates old age from youth, realizes that he has already experienced many important things, and remembers this with the mood that the topic still brings him. He is sincere and remains faithful to good craftsmanship. The love with which he works with the word is traditionally admirable. He does not repeat himself in melodies or lyrics, he has enough harmonious ideas and beautiful words.

Of course, there is also his charismatic presentation. Natural, a bit narrative, but still melodic enough, calm, sober and gently urgent. His color of voice, somehow wiser after years, only reminds us of how distinctive Nohavica he is on the Czech folk scene.
