Review: Gang Beasts Switch-versie – NWTV

Gang Beasts is an indie game from British developer Boneloaf. In 2017 the game already appeared on PC and PlayStation 4 and two years later it was the Xbox One’s turn. Two years later, the game is finally available on the Switch. Time for a review.

In Gang Beasts you control a jelly-like puppet that (after some adjustments) competes against other jelly-like puppets. You do this in different ways and at various locations. There is a level where you have to throw each other off a high billboard, there is a level in an incinerator or on a moving truck. Favorite was the level with a moving subway on both sides. The game gives you the opportunity to get hit by the subway once without finishing immediately. This sometimes makes you feel a little too invincible.

Gang Beasts gives you the opportunity to work alone or in teams to kill each other. Run, kick, push, pull. Because of the ragdoll physics sometimes it feels like watching kids fighting or drunks. The customization options also contribute to the humor, such as the bull hat, a construction worker outfit, Rick and Morty costumes and the outfit of a certain American president (provided you change the color of your doll to orange).

When playing Gang Beasts should we actually think about Octodad: Deadliest Catch: the controls aren’t completely smooth and a move where you can cling to objects or an opponent was both hilarious and frustrating. A big point of annoyance was also the control of the menu, it could be that the game already started while someone was still adjusting his character.

Also the limited number of customization options and game variants have ensured that we were tired of it after a few hours. A major annoyance for console gamers is that the online multiplayer of Gang Beasts seems to work poorly. Even after several attempts, we cannot but come to the same conclusion.

Gang Beasts guarantees some hilarious moments with friends, but unfortunately fails to leave a lasting impression.

Gang Beasts was played on the Nintendo Switch for this review, the game is also available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
