Jakarta, CNNIndonesia —
Sky-high expectations certainly filled my mind and heart when I heard The First Slam Dunk was broadcast in Indonesia. Moreover, memories of the anime series Slam Dunk what I witnessed since elementary school is still in my mind, even though other memories have been buried.
Decades of ridiculous story of Hanamichi Sakuragi made me curious, what’s the future with Shohoku? Is he really the basketball genius he always claims to be?
However, the creator of Slam Dunk who is also the writer and director of The First Slam Dunk, Takehiko Inoue, prefers to let this question remain wishful thinking.
Inoue really presents the story of Ryota Miyagi aka Ryo-chan as the main dish of The First Slam Dunk, just like the trailer that aired a few weeks earlier.
Miyagi known as point guard alias playmaker aka Shohoku High School’s main attack controller. The high school sophomore boy with the number back 7 is described as a short young man who doesn’t talk much, but is very agile and agile at times dribbling basketball.
Inoue’s decision is actually a bold step that should be appreciated. He provides space for ordinary viewers, aka blind-watchers, to take part in enjoying the iconic story of Slam Dunk in the current era.
Inoue’s move also did not immediately make me pessimistic. I still hope Sakuragi is still ‘responsible’ as the protagonist in this film.
That wish was answered by Inoue in the first minute of the scene between Shohoku High School and Sannoh High School, which is considered the strongest high school basketball team in Japan.
The red-haired goon managed to live up to the audience’s expectations with a stunning debut score for Shohoku.
“Straight off like this, huh?” is the first sentence that appears to me, not even 10 minutes after the film begins.
In fact, Inoue is just nosy. After that shocking scene, the heartbreaking story of the Miyagi family set against the coast of Okinawa is served as the main course.
The First Slam Dunk is the main stage for Miyagi to be better known, although I don’t understand why Inoue chose this character to get so many portions in this film.
That’s because all this time, Ryota Miyagi has been considered an “okay he’s cool” character, I never thought I could ‘rank up’ to become a central character in the feature film Slam Dunk.
Inoue once again presents himself as an unpredictable director. He not only replaces the central character, but also adds a puzzle that adds to the burden on the minds of Slam Dunk fans.
“I have to wait another dozen years to watch the next Slam Dunk story,” I muttered while facing the feeling love-hate relationship with Inoue.
