REVIEW: Edible Life is heading to Europe’s Oscars, but mostly it’s fun – News

“I eat, I eat, I eat you, life,” raps in the beginning of his main hero, the seventh grader Benjamin Pipetka, together with a friend, who immediately tells him that ” sister is going to do it with us”, which means that a new band is born.

Ben doesn’t live with his mother because his father found someone else. He loves food, which his grandmother taught him to cook well. But thanks to both, he is very fat. Although he has friends at school and a strong place in the band, there are also plenty of rough bullies who are not far from bullying.

But Ben just can’t give up. He is not a tramp, but a very self-confident boy who suffers in the shop when he tries on new pants and at school under the orders of the gym teacher, but thanks to his sense of humor, he can handle anything, including teachers. ‘ comments.

Neither the doctor who threatened health problems, nor the parents, who suddenly saw through the medical report and worried about their son, led them to accept a diet plan. It is only the first emotional explosion that leads him to eat healthier and exercise with the hope that if he loses a few kilos, the girl will be on fire just like him.

Life to Eat is a film that is a joy to watch. Although it has a French literary model, Mikaël Ollivier’s book, which was also published in our country under the same name, the Czech viewer feels at home there.

Songs from the movie life to eat

The screenwriter Petr Jarchovský once again confirmed that his strongest professional aspect is the adaptation of literary works. Let’s not forget the books by Petr Šabach, based on which he wrote the settings for Years of Jackals, Pelíšk and Pupend, or the book Květa Legátová, based on which he wrote Želary. This time, too, he managed to magically translate the French source into the Czech environment, incorporating his language and humor.

“Why are we beating you? puberty, I’m afraid,” says the teacher to Ben, and the viewer immediately remembers the same thoughts they have now, in the case of parents of old cantors.

The art page, under which Kristina Dufková is also signed, is attractive both in the figures of people and animals that live in the home of Ben’s mother – a veterinarian. And the good things that Ben eats here with irresistible pleasure, and then regretfully puts them away, are able to send the audience straight from the cinema to the candy store.

The direction is very fast, the pace does not drop, times when the viewer laughs regularly in turn with touching situations. Problems of adolescence, divided families and obesity are presented non-violently.

An important part of the film is good music and catchy and funny songs by Michal Novinski and Jiří Macháček, who also played one of the secondary characters.

The main one was then spoken by the first debater, Hugo Kovács, who is now fifteen years old, who correctly expressed the joy and sadness of a teenage boy.
