The Disappointing Review of ‘Argylle’ by Matthew Vaughn

Taylor Swift’s Involvement Debunked

Recent rumors circulating on social media suggested that Taylor Swift, under the pseudonym Elly Conway, may have written the “Argylle” spy novels. However, lead actress Bryce Dallas Howard has clearly denied any connection between the iconic singer and the character Elly. Despite some resemblances, such as carrying a Scottish Fold cat, Taylor Swift’s alleged involvement remains mere speculation.

Mismatched Flair for ‘Argylle’

The so-called spy comedy, “Argylle,” directed by Matthew Vaughn of “Kingsman” fame and co-written by Jason Fuchs (“Wonder Woman”), starts on a promising note. Vaughn, aiming for a younger audience with a PG-13 rating, sought to make a film that his own daughters could enjoy. However, the movie fails to deliver on its initial potential.

Overdrawn Plot and Exhausting Runtime

At a lengthy two hours and 19 minutes, “Argylle” overstays its welcome and becomes an overwhelming experience for viewers of all ages. The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard as Elly, a cat-loving Colorado author who pens thrilling novels about Agent Argylle, played by Henry Cavill. The storyline borrows heavily from the romantic adventure “Romancing the Stone,” but the target audience, largely unfamiliar with the 1984 film, may find it uninteresting.

Underwhelming Action Sequences

Legendary singer Dua Lipa makes a brief appearance, but even she can’t save the film from its lackluster action set pieces featuring questionable digital effects. The narrative’s imaginary segments are intermittently read by Elly’s mother, played by the exceptionally funny Catherine O’Hara, who rightfully questions the strained excitement within her daughter’s writing.

Missed Potential with Lackluster Performances

When Elly and her cat Alfie board a train to visit her parents, unintended encounters with espionage expert Aidan, portrayed by an unconventional and less glamorous Sam Rockwell, propel the film’s plot. The renowned Bryan Cranston also appears, playing the role of a crime boss named Ritter who seeks answers about Elly’s book, echoing his own illicit activities.

It’s challenging to muster excitement due to the exaggerated acting, repetitive action sequences, and predictable jokes that often fall flat. As a fan of Matthew Vaughn’s previous successful works, notably “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and “X-Men: First Class,” witnessing the disappointing outcome of “Argylle” is truly disheartening. Perhaps Swift’s involvement could have made a difference. Hopefully, Vaughn’s future project, “Deadpool 3,” will help ease the pain brought on by the shortcomings of “Argylle.”
