Junichi Date’s lens paradise “CAPA” July 2023 issue Another shot ③
Canon’s mirrorless camera “EOS R8” is about 461g*, which is surprisingly light for a full-size machine. However, since the in-body image stabilization is not installed, it is desirable that the standard zoom is equipped with an in-lens image stabilization and that there is little blank area in the focal length range when combined with the telephoto zoom. From that point of view, I picked up four RF standard zoom lenses and checked their features and rendering performance.
This time, we will check the L lens “RF24-105mm F4 L IS USM” with an open F4 over the entire zoom range.
* Including battery and memory card.
“Lens Paradise” is a popular series of “CAPA” where photographer Junichi Date uses and reviews various lenses. In this article, we will introduce other shots and impressions that could not be included in the July 2023 issue of “Lens Paradise”.

The color is good and you can feel the depth in the shadow area.
The actual selling price difference with “RF24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM” is less than three times. Maintaining the brightness of F4 even at the telephoto end is a big advantage, but the F-number at the wide end is the same, and I don’t feel a dramatic difference in resolution performance. However, the color reproduction is better than that of the “RF24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM”, and you can feel the depth of the shadows.

Depth of field is fairly shallow
Even at the telephoto end, the aperture is bright at f/4, and you can get a larger bokeh at portrait shooting distances. However, since the depth of field is too shallow for close-up photography, I stopped down to F11 for this cut. Still, only part of the poppy flower is in focus. The bokeh in the background is soft, and even though it was cloudy, the poppies and green colors are clearly visible.

The camera shake correction is effective, and you can shoot without blurring even at 1/8 seconds
Taken with the aperture wide open. Since the Hikawa Maru is in focus, the Minato Mirai building in the background is slightly blurred at actual pixel size. There are few purple fringes in streetlights and building window lights, and the surrounding light sources are stable. The camera shake correction works well, and even at 1/8 seconds, I was able to shoot perfectly without blurring.

I will check “RF24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM” next time. See the July 2023 issue of “CAPA” for live-action examples and detailed explanations not introduced in this article.
