Review: Artichokes – NWTV

In the card game Artichokes your garden is polluted by this tricky vegetable. It is therefore up to you to get rid of it and that can be done by adding other vegetables to your hand. Each vegetable has its own usefulness with which you can help yourself by removing artichokes or bothering others. Read here whether we got green fingers from this card game.

You win Artichokes if you take new cards in your hand at the end of your turn and there are no more artichokes in between. You can achieve this by using vegetables that remove this tricky vegetable or by exchanging it with your opponents. You take a new card every round, play as many vegetables as you want and can, discard your hand and take new cards. Each vegetable has a condition to be played, which prevents you from randomly betting cards. For example, the broccoli can remove an artichoke, but only if you have at least three in your hand, the onion removes an artichoke, but then an opponent gets this onion, and so on. Sometimes you will have to make choices in your turn in terms of vegetables to use in order to get the most favorable result. Some cards allow you to place more cards in your draw pile, so you have a higher chance of encountering fewer artichokes.

The nice thing about it Artichokes is that each tactic has its own advantage and disadvantage. One jar we quickly lost our artichokes, but it took a while before we had a new full hand without artichokes. During the other pot we had harvested so much new vegetables that the chance of an artichoke pack got smaller and smaller. The disadvantage, however, was that it was more difficult to get rid of our artichokes, but we could perform more actions. You will sometimes have to take risks in the hope that you will get a more favorable hand the next turn.

For example, jars sometimes last long and other times short. Since there is also a lot of luck involved, since you can only influence what your new hand is and are never sure what the five cards you take will be, the game can be over when enough artichokes have been removed. As this is not too easy, the game starts fairly quietly, but in the end it can become quite exciting for all players anytime new cards are drawn, because you never know whether the player will win or not. Thus, this card game knows how to build up the tension well until the moment of victory.

Artichokes is therefore perfect for a quick game if you have already played it, since all the rules about vegetables take some getting used to. The first few pots it will be a lot of reading and thinking about which choices are the most practical, but once used to the different vegetables and their powers, it plays away with intense tension.
