Screened mouse cells for special molecules
What the American researchers have now looked at more closely is whether it is possible to reverse the aging process of cells and turn back their biological clock without making the cells so “young” that they become potentially cancerous.
In the study, the researchers screened special molecules in the mouse cells, which when combined in a certain way could reverse the cells’ aging process and thus make the cells younger.
Six different chemical cocktails
They managed to identify six different chemical cocktails, which in less than a week could reverse the aging of cells. Their research, which has been titled “Chemically induced reprogramming to reverse cellular aging”, has been published in the journal Aging.
The researchers say their discovery has the potential to revolutionize the fight against aging, age-related diseases and injuries, and make it possible to rejuvenate the entire body.
Previously, it was only possible to change the aging process of cells by using gene therapy, which is very expensive and at the same time fraught with risk, because you add genetically manipulated material to the body.
Younger with one more pill
“Until recently, we could only slow down the aging process. With this new insight, we have the opportunity to reverse it,” explains David A. Sinclair, who is a professor in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and is leading the new research.
Before transferring their discovery to humans, the six chemical cocktails must be tested on mammals to ensure they are safe to use on humans. The chemical substances are known, among other things, from medicines, but thus also have some specific properties in connection with the aging process – especially when the substances are combined.
“With this new knowledge, we potentially have an opportunity to reverse the aging process with a single tablet and can do everything from improving vision to effectively treating a wide range of age-related diseases,” explains David A. Sinclair.
