After three good years for Sica St Pol de Léon, the economic context was very complicated in 2022 with an anxiety-provoking climate, maintained by the war in Ukraine, the soaring cost of energy and agricultural inputs. Down 8% over the 2021-2022 financial year, the cooperative’s turnover reflects this reality. It amounts to 218 million euros, split between the vegetable activity, 175 M€ (-10%), and horticulture, 43 M€ (-1%). This is what emerges from the general meeting of the Sica St Pol de Léon, which took place this Friday, March 17, 2023.
It is the organic range that is the most impacted. With consumption slowing down while paradoxically societal and political demand is pushing for increased production, Sica producers have played the game: their volumes have increased by 12% in 2022. Unfortunately, the cooperative is not immune to the slump affecting all sectors with products sold, at best, at conventional prices. Turnover, down 6%, amounted to €12.4 million. », indicate the Sica
On the production side, the mild winter in 2022, coupled with fierce European competition, did not favor consumption cauliflower and other winter vegetables which show a significant drop in turnover. ” The summer drought was then dramatic for the majority of our crops, especially artichoke, strongly impacting yields and quality. » The tomato also was not spared. Its turnover of 34 million euros suffered a drop of 8%relatively contained despite the soaring cost of energy and raw materials.
As to Kerisnel horticultural center, after two exceptional years, growth stalled in 2022 (-1%) with revenue of €43 million. An encouraging sign, the transfer of farms is taking place without difficulty in horticulture and new producers are joining the section with an extended range.
