Revelers went on a bar crawl dressed as Santa Claus in New York

NEW YORK — Crowds of people dressed as jolly Santas took to the streets of New York for the Santas’ Reunion (“SantaCon”) charity bar crawl on Saturday.

The boozy ride, which had no shortage of green grinches, elves and other Christmas characters, began at 10 a.m. in the bars and clubs of Manhattan. Party-goers were then expected to head downtown, where the festivities were expected to end at 8 p.m. at local bars in the East Village.

Organizers encouraged attendees to donate $15 to enter participating venues, which they said will be donated to charitable causes.

Similar Christmas-themed parties were planned for Saturday in several cities in the United States and Europe, from San Francisco to Cincinnati, London and Berlin.

As in years past, transit agencies hoped to keep the festivities from causing too much chaos on the nation’s busiest rail system.

Commuter rail lines in New Jersey and suburban New York have banned passengers from drinking on Manhattan-bound trains from 4 a.m. Saturday until noon Sunday.

The NYPD also reminded partygoers that the city’s open container regulations, which prohibit consuming alcohol on the street, still apply.

“Ensuring everyone has access to safe and orderly travel is a top priority,” Metropolitan Transit Authority Police Chief John Mueller said in a statement earlier this week announcing the restrictions. “The holiday season is a wonderful time of year, and we want everyone to arrive at their destination smoothly and on time while enjoying the festivities.”
