With repeated heat waves, the forecourt of the Saint-Jean station – like other squares in the city – has become a place to avoid in summer in Bordeaux. Ultra mineral, space sorely lacking in vegetation that can serve asislands of freshness.
Waiting for major works to remedy this, as planned by the environmental town hall as part of its policy of reclaiming the city’s vegetation, SNCF Gares et Connexions proceeded at the beginning of July 2023 to installing potted trees in front of the entrance to halls 1 and 2.
The project is supported and financed by the SNCF
The experiment should last about a year, the opportunity to see how the quarantine of plantations evolve. But in the long term, in a few years, the town hall plans to move up a gear on the revegetation of this public space.
“The current project, supported and entirely financed by the SNCF, foreshadows on a very small scale the future pacification of the historic square from the Gare Saint-Jean”, projects Didier Jeanjean, the deputy mayor in charge of nature in the city.
Indeed, the forecourt must undergo an in-depth redevelopment with a reorganization of the multimodal exchange hub. Some bus lines should no longer pass through the forecourt and stations could disappear to free up space for pedestrians.
What about the car? Should traffic lanes be removed in rue Charles Domercq? Where to put the two-wheelers that clutter the public road in front of the station? Several reflections are carried out between the various actors concerned (town hall, Métropole, SNCF, etc.).
“Nothing concrete yet”
“There is nothing concrete, we are on the intentions for the moment”, assures Didier Jeanjean. “It’s under construction. Nothing has been decided yet”, abounds Olivier Cazaux, the district mayor.

Only one thing seems well and truly confirmed: the revegetation of the forecourt. We do not yet know what form and what scale it will take, but the mayor of Bordeaux Sud admits that planting in the ground is planned.
He also mentions a green flowwhich will leave from the new Amédée Saint-Germain district (more precisely from the Citernes workshop), to reach the forecourt and then the quays via the future “Canopia” pedestrian artery (called “Rue Bordelaise” under the previous term of office).
On the other hand, you should not be in a hurry. The restructuring of the forecourt, in particular with the planting of trees, is not scheduled anytime soon. “It will not be done before the end of the mandate”, announces Didier Jeanjean. Either after 2026.
