The Joint Staff Office of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) first announced that it had staked out the aircraft carrier Liaoning along with the Type 052D destroyer, Type 054A frigate, and Type 901 reload vessel. The Chinese carrier strike group had been under surveillance since sailing from the China Sea. East to the western Pacific Ocean southeast of Okinawa on December 15.
The Chinese fleet then moved further southeast and conducted a series of war games, including the launch and landing of J-15 fighter jets from the Liaoning, as well as Z-9 and Z-18 helicopter flights.
The Liaoning carrier strike group then returned to the East China Sea on December 25, 2021.
Japanese authorities previously said that the Izumo, along with the destroyer Akizuki, had been monitoring Chinese activities. The Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) P-1 and P-3 maritime patrol aircraft also help oversee the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) war games.
Japanese fighter jets are occasionally deployed in response to Chinese J-15s flying from Liaoning. Other video footage shows a Japanese F-15J Eagle fighter jet intercepting a Chinese J-15.
