An airline in Japan disembarked a male passenger for refusing to wear a mask on the flight Saturday 12 September 2020. This is the latest case of the airline’s refusal of passengers who did not comply with the obligation to wear a mask as part of health protocols during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Representatives for a subsidiary of Japan Airlines Co said the passenger was forced off the plane before taking off on Saturday afternoon in northern Japan. He insisted on rejecting requests for cabin crew to wear masks, without explaining why.
“We determined that the man’s actions violated the rules on the plane,” a Hokkaido Air System Co official was quoted as saying Japan Today, Tuesday 15 September 2020.
The official added that his party could provide another way out if the plane passengers explained why. “We may be able to make adjustments for him to fly without wearing a mask, such as preparing another seat for him,” he continued.
Later, the passenger in question revealed the reasons for his behavior. He admits that he often experiences rashes or feels suffocated when wearing a mask. However, he did not want to discuss his condition in front of the other passengers on the plane.
The incident occurred on a domestic flight route connecting Okushiri and Hakodate in Hokkaido, Japan. As a result, the plane carrying 21 passengers was late in flying 30 minutes from the due schedule.
