On the way to improving road safety in Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada is taking steps to revise the system for issuing driver’s licenses. A bill aimed at improving this system is already under consideration in Parliament.
The bill is currently being considered by the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Transport and Infrastructure. The deputy director of this committee, Yulia Klimenko, calls for a reduction in the validity of driver’s licenses by 20 years.
Under current law, the validity period for driving licenses is 30 years, which committee members say may be too long. The possibility of reducing this period by half or even three times is being considered. As a result of this initiative, Ukrainians may have to retake exams and renew their driver’s licenses every 10-15 years.
In addition, it is planned to introduce mandatory testing of the psychological and physical condition of drivers every 10-15 years. If numerous traffic fines accumulate, drivers may also be required to take theoretical and practical exams again.
It is expected that these changes will lead to an increase in the workload of the Ministry of Internal Affairs service centers and stricter control over drivers in order to ensure safety on the roads.
