The report of the international news agency Reuters about the safety of the Greek railways is going around the world one year after crime in Tempe.
“The fear for safety remains” reads the report highlighting the inaction of the Mitsotakis government a year after the worst railway accident in Greece.
“Little has been done to significantly improve train safety, despite growing evidence that system deficiencies contributed to the accident,” and Greece’s rail network “is prone to future accidents if safety is not improved,” the report said. international agency which emphasizes that “train remote control and communication systems, required under European Union law, are still not working”.
After 57 people were killed in Greece’s worst train crash a year ago, the government vowed to fix a system crumbling from decades of neglect.
“Trains will resume operating safely to the maximum possible level,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said after the crash.
A year on, however, accident experts and rail officials say little has been done to significantly improve train safety, despite mounting evidence that system deficiencies contributed to the accident.
The trains’ remote control and communication systems, required under European Union law, are still not working, officials told Reuters. Rail staff numbers at the main rail company have been reduced since the crash and those remaining are awaiting retraining.
The situation worries experts who say Greece’s rail network is prone to future accidents if safety is not improved. Meanwhile, grieving families and survivors are demanding answers.
“We didn’t learn our lesson and we didn’t act,” said Kostas Lakafosis, an accident investigator appointed by relatives of the victims. “Unfortunately, the railroad is in no better shape.”
