Reus on MLS move: “Europe was honestly out of the question for me”

It had been on the horizon for months, and on Thursday Marco Reus’ move to the MLS was finally completed. There is great anticipation and curiosity about the adventure in Los Angeles.

In true style, LA Galaxy announced its prominent new signing on Thursday afternoon Central European Time. “Marco Reus is a world-class player,” said Will Kuntz, General Manager of the MLS club. Those in charge see the BVB icon as being on a par with his well-known predecessors David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Steven Gerrard.

“It makes me proud,” says Reus in Sky-Interview about the comparisons: “The three of them have done incredible work – in the past – and then they have shown off again here. That is also my goal. I want to become champions here with the club.”

A statement from the new signing. LA Galaxy currently leads the Western Conference with 49 points from 26 games. However, a certain Lionel Messi, who Reus may meet on the way to the title, is also pursuing the same plan. “He didn’t send a message. I doubt there will be one,” jokes the former international player: “But it’s nice to play against him again in the league.”

Because the move to Los Angeles took quite a while, there was room for speculation. But Reus made it clear: “I knew that I definitely didn’t want to stay in the Bundesliga. And to be honest, Europe wasn’t an option for me either, because I want to do something completely different at the end of my career. Something different in terms of language, something different for the family.”

“Living here isn’t so bad”

Reus also wants to broaden his horizons overseas. “I came into contact with LA Galaxy very, very early on and I liked it right away,” admits the 35-year-old: “Not just the conversations, but also everything else. Living here isn’t so bad. You can do an incredible amount of things and that was a big factor in saying that you could definitely imagine doing that.”

For this reason, Reus made an “early decision”. The curiosity and anticipation for the MLS are great. “In the Bundesliga, you always had the feeling, even when you played away, that so many spectators supported you, you simply had your fans everywhere. I don’t know if it’s the same here, but you’ll get to know it. Also football in general.”

Reus’ first home game may be on August 25th, when he faces Atlanta United.
