“Returning to the gym will counteract the consequences of Covid”. Nerio Alessandri: it’s the solution, not the problem

After ten months of closure and economic damage of 2 billion euros, and over 200,000 people out of work in 2020 in the gym sector, as shown by the survey of the International Fitness Observatory published a month ago, on May 24 the gyms reopen. In fact, the government gives the green light to the protocol on sport with the rules validated by the Technical Scientific Committee, such as using your own mat or changing before arriving at the gym, to minimize gatherings in the common areas. “The gyms – says Nerio Alessandri, founder and president of Technogym – have been closed for too long and penalized disproportionately compared to other sectors that have already reopened”. Going to the gym is good for your health, ”adds Alessandri.

Physical activity for the founder of Technogym is fundamental. “Science clearly demonstrates this – assures Alessandri – and there are numerous evidences on the benefits of regular physical exercise to prevent and treat numerous cardiovascular, metabolic and bad lifestyles diseases”. A recent research of the British Journal of Sport Medicine, Alessandri explains, “it shows that in the case of Covid, those who do not carry out regular physical activity are 73% more likely to suffer serious consequences and to be hospitalized in intensive care”. The survey is also cited in the campaign promoted by Technogym in support of Italian fitness clubs. “All this to say that gyms and fitness are the solution and not the problem”.

And if home fitness was a way of moving that spread during the months of the pandemic, the lockdown scenario, says Alessandri, was not reassuring: “Due to the lack of physical activity, 45% of people have gained weight , 50% reported greater stress and 37% even depression ”.

The reopening of the gyms, Alessandri concludes, “is a positive sign not only from an economic point of view for operators and professionals in the sector, but above all from a social and health point of view for people’s need to feel good”.
