Returning to distance learning: a particular shame for the children

In Haltern, too, the schools will return to distance learning on Monday. That is regrettable, because school is more than learning. A comment.

Another role backwards for the schools. Most of them stay empty after the Easter break. Only the final classes are allowed to attend face-to-face classes. The decision of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia demands a lot from those affected, also in Haltern.

In the short term, the teachers have to adjust to distance teaching again and the families have to reorganize themselves. The children are probably worst off. Learning in the home office, even if the digital technology works, is just an emergency solution. For life you learn not only in the lessons, but especially in the breaks or on the way to school. Laughing and arguing with each other – being without adult supervision for once.

The opening of the schools was a risk. Now the third wave of the pandemic is forcing us to step backwards for the time being. The lack of rapid tests probably contributes to this. Another organizational disaster.

Only the graduating classes are allowed to go to school. Exams await them under difficult conditions and then not even the prospect of lavish party nights afterwards. Those who survive such conditions deserve special recognition and have certainly learned a lot for life. For example, holding out in a pandemic.

And: Despite all the criticism of the Corona policy in Germany, a look at the world situation may comfort us. Millions of children cannot attend classes at all. A generation of schoolchildren is lost to the pandemic.
