Seven people arriving from Canada were quickly sent back to square one after attempting to illegally cross the US border through private property in northern Vermont.

The individuals tried to cross the border in a vehicle last Sunday, passing through the lawn of the Haskell Free library in the county of Derby Line, the Customs and the Department said in a statement on Thursday. They were subsequently apprehended by border patrol agents, who discovered that the occupiers, from Canada, France and Romania, did not all have legal status to be in the United States. They were therefore returned to Canada.
