Return what you stole from our land

Sydney – Arab Journal

An independent Australian senator, Senator Lydia Thorpe, accused British King Charles III, after he delivered a speech in the Australian Parliament building, of committing “genocide” in Australia.

After the king recognized the indigenous people of Australia, who lived in the country before British settlers, Thorpe told King Charles III: “Give us back what you stole from us: our bones, our skulls, our children, our people.”

The independent senator added: “We want a treaty with our government.” After being escorted out of the hall, she continued: “This is not your land. This is our land.”

Australia was a British colony for more than a century, during which thousands of Aboriginal people were killed and many were displaced. Since 1901, Australia has become an independent country, but it remains a member of the Commonwealth and recognizes British sovereignty as the de facto head of state.

Thorpe is known for her fiery speeches and anti-UK stances.

When she was sworn in in 2022, Thorpe blatantly criticized Elizabeth II, Charles’s late mother, who was Queen of the United Kingdom at the time. That day, Thorpe sarcastically swore to faithfully serve “Her Majesty the Colonial Queen Elizabeth II.”

The Senate President, Sue Lines, at the time, had to turn to Thorpe and say: “Senator Thorpe, Senator Thorpe, you must take the oath as it is written on the paper.”
