Haason Reddick returns to the New York Jets, ending his contract strike and agreeing to an amended contract. He is expected to play next week.
After more than six months, Haason Reddick has decided to start working for the New York Jets. The highly regarded senior left tackle ended his contract strike on Sunday and agreed to an amended contract with the Jets, his agent told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “We will continue to work on a long-term extension with the Jets,” said agent Drew Rosenhaus, who negotiated the amended contract with Ryan Matha.
Contract with Jets
Reddick is expected to be with the Jets on Monday morning. The Jets have agreed to waive more than $12 million in penalties in exchange for the two-time Pro Bowler agreeing to fulfill his contract for the remainder of the season and return to the team. Rosenhaus confirmed that Jets owner Woody Johnson was “very committed to getting this resolved.”
The Jets had given Reddick permission to seek a trade, but always intended to keep him, a source said. The Jets (2-4) have two new additions that will give them hope to turn the season around. Reddick’s return comes just five days after the Las Vegas Raiders traded star receiver Davante Adams. The Reddick saga marks a strange chapter, even by Jets standards.
From Philadelphia to New York
Reddick was traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Jets in March and initially said he was “happy” with his new address. But then he refused to join the team, asked for a trade at training camp and was dropped by his longtime organization before he left new agents. After being dropped by CAA, Reddick signed with Rosenhaus and Matha, who immediately announced his intention to “stay with the Jets for years.”
Reddick’s future with the Jets
It’s possible that Reddick could play against the New England Patriots next week, but his availability will depend on his fitness. The Jets, who play the Steelers in Pittsburgh on Sunday night, have the option to use a two-week roster exception. Reddick, 30, anchors a defense that has recorded 20 sacks this season, which ranks third in the league NFL mean He will make up for the loss of defensive end Jermaine Johnson, who is out for the season after tearing his Achilles tendon in Week 2.
Contractual problems and claims
Reddick skipped the entire offseason, including mandatory minicamp and training camp. Frustrated by the lack of a long-term contract, Reddick officially requested a trade on August 12th. The Jets said they would not trade him or negotiate until he reports.
Entering the season, Reddick was due a non-guaranteed base salary of $14.25 million, the final year of the three-year, $45 million contract he signed with the Eagles as a free agent in 2022. He felt he had outlived his contract and wanted to be like one of the best rushers in the game NFL to pay, and that was the main reason the Eagles offered him despite his strong performance in the offseason.
Reddick has 58 career sacks spread over seven seasons with the Eagles, Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals. The 2017 first-round pick has been one of the league’s most prolific pass rushers over the past four seasons, recording 50.5 sacks in that span.
