Patrick Mahomes gets a new, familiar starting position: JuJu Smith-Schuster returns to the NFL champions and is expected to build on the success of 2022.
After a year to forget, it’s back to familiar territory in the NFL: JuJu Smith-Schuster has finally closed his unfortunate chapter with the New England Patriots and has been rejoined by his former franchise, the Kansas City Chiefs. Two years after his Super Bowl triumph with KC, he is now working on completing the triple with the back-to-back champions and superstar Patrick Mahomes.
Smith-Schuster originally signed a three-year contract with the Patriots as a free agent that would have earned him $25 million. But then the wide receiver, who was Mahomes’ second-best target behind Travis Kelce in 2022, disappointed with his new organization: In the 2023 season, the 27-year-old only played eleven games in which he caught 29 passes for 260 yards. In 2022, he caught 933 yards on 78 successful passes.
Marquise Brown injured – and what happens to Rashee Rice?
An unsatisfactory result that prompted the Patriots to release Smith-Schuster. The Pats are still stuck with the contract, which makes the Chiefs even happier that they were able to bring Smith-Schuster back into the team for minimal pay. Among other things, he is supposed to compensate for the injury-related absence of Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, who injured his shoulder in the preseason.
In addition, the NFL champion does not know what will happen to Rashee Rice after his fateful accident. Schuster-Smith is now entering his second season with the Chiefs. He spent most of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, for whom he played five consecutive seasons between 2017 and 2021.
