Tuners showed the new ZAZ-965 Zaporozhets with a 260 hp turbo engine.
The legendary “Zaporozhets” or, as it was also called, “Humpbacked”, enjoyed wild popularity in Soviet times. And this is not surprising – in the 1960s it was one of the most affordable cars in the USSR. An ordinary Soviet person could afford this car, which explains the citizens’ love for the Zaporozhets.
However, it is worth recognizing that it was not invented by Soviet engineers. The ZAZ-965 was actually completely copied from the Italian hit – Fiat 600. Their external similarity is striking. In the USSR, “Brokeback” was not updated, which is why interest in it faded, and eventually production ceased.
But there are enthusiasts in the post-Soviet space who decided to dream – what could the ZAZ-965 become if it were a modern car? The embodiment of these fantasies was a unique tuning project. The body of the original Zaporozhets was taken as a basis, and the platform with the latest technology performance was developed by Lotus. More precisely, the craftsmen borrowed it from Lotus.
The exterior design has remained virtually unchanged – only the wheel arches have been widened to accommodate rims on low-profile tires. This gave the “Humpbacked” a sportier look by lowering the ground clearance. The headlights have also been replaced – now they are LED, painted black. The body was painted bright blue, the chrome was polished, leaving one exhaust pipe in the center.
But the interior has been transformed beyond recognition – bucket sports seats, a new steering wheel and dashboard have been installed. The beige trim matches the door trim with speakers. Well, under the hood of the Zaporozhets they placed a 260-horsepower 1.8-liter turbo engine. The result is a retro car with modern filling. Its creators estimated the cost at 19 million rubles. This, of course, is a huge price for a “Zaporozhets”, but you can be sure that this particular example will be appreciated by many fans and collectors of retro equipment. (photo: www.drive2.ru)
