Werder suddenly has a new option for the offensive – without any transfer.
Coach Ole Werner had Mitchell Weiser (30) play as part of the three-man offensive in the 4-3 win in Hoffenheim. Behind Marvin Ducksch and next to Romano Schmid, Weiser created a goal threat with his speed. A new job for Weiser that fit!
Werner: “It was a different positioning than against Bayern and there was a different idea behind it. In interaction with Romano and Marvin he developed a lot of creativity. He helped us a lot. And the three in front had fun.”
Weiser was actually considered indispensable on the traditional right side. Against Bayern he stormed at the front line alongside Ducksch without success, but now he showed a strong performance in the offensive trio.

Werder mixes up the dice more wisely
The retraining has its reasons. Looking in front Marco Grüll still his Bundesliga form. The new signing (free transfer from Rapid Vienna) is still a goal threat.
Professional boss Peter Niemeyer told BILD: “Marco is not yet a finished Bundesliga player. That was completely clear to us. He comes to us from a minor league. We’ll give him the time to develop.”
Keke Topp also has to prove his suitability for the Bundesliga after strong preparation and a hat-trick in Cottbus (DFB Cup). Therefore, Weiser is currently relegating the two real strikers to the bench.
And his place on the right becomes free. The only option in the squad: Felix Agu, who had established himself on the left side with strong performances. Niemeyer: “Felix accepted the role on the right well. I see him as so stable that he can play on both sides.”

The big shift frees up space on the left for Derrick Köhn, who immediately causes a stir with his offensive spirit.
Niemeyer: “Pushing Mitch forward paid off. It will remain an option. This gives the trainer more options. We have players who can be used multifunctionally. That makes us stronger because it makes us unpredictable.”
