Retirement of Top General Mark Milley and Criticism of Former President Donald Trump

Washington DC

Top general United States of America (AS), Mark Milley, announced his retirement from his position as Chief of Staff of the US Military. In his parting words, Milley took aim at the former President Donald Trump by saying that no soldier would swear to serve a leader who had ‘ambitions to become a dictator’.

As reported AFPSaturday (30/9/2023), Milley’s sharp satire described how the US military has been dragged into a political arena that has become increasingly volatile since the era of the Trump administration.

At a military ceremony for his resignation attended by Austin and President Joe Biden on Friday (29/9) local time, Milley did not mention Trump directly, but there is no doubt that his allusion was aimed at the 45th US President.

“We don’t swear an oath to a king, or a queen, or a tyrant or a dictator,” Milley insisted, referring to the US military.

“And we do not swear to a figure who has ambitions to become a dictator,” he said.

Air Force General Charles ‘CQ’ Brown will replace Milley. Brown will be the second black officer after Colin Powell to serve as Chief of Staff of the US Military, when the Pentagon was led by Lloyd Austin who became the first black Minister of Defense (Menhan) in the US.

Milley’s retirement announcement came after a tumultuous tenure as a top US military officer, which saw him repeatedly face crises at home and abroad.

“These crises happen one after another,” Milley told AFP last month.
