Retirement of Ariane 5: European Space Agency’s Reliable Rocket

Jakarta

Either one rocket most reliable in the history of European space flight, that is Ariane 5, has entered retirement age. This Ariane 5 rocket once carried the Telkom 3S and BRIsat satellites into orbit.

Ariane 5 has just completed its final launch on Wednesday (5/7) at 19.00 local time. The rocket carried a pair of communications satellites for the German and Italian Governments from the French Guiana Space Center.

European Space Agency (ESA) revealed that the launch was the 117th for Ariane 5 since 1996, one of the two rockets carrying BRIsat on 18 June 2016 and the Telkom 3S satellite on 14 February 2017.

Ariane 5 also took part in other historic launches, the Rosetta launch to catch comet 67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko, the European navigation satellite Galileo, and the James Webb Space Telescope.

ESA mentions that Ariane 5 It has the power to carry double the payload capacity of its predecessor, the Ariane 4, which operated from 1988 to 2003.

In fact, the Ariane 5’s capacity allows it to orbit two large telecommunications satellites in one launch, or to propel a very large payload into space.

That power has made Ariane 5 a heavyweight rocket developed by Europe and operated by Arianespace compared to previous generations.

“Where the Ariane 1, 2 and 3 (1979-1989) and Ariane 4 (1988-2003) were closely related, the larger and more powerful Ariane 5 was developed in essence as an all-new launch system,” ESA said in a written statement, Friday (7/7/2023).

With the retirement of the Ariane 5, ESA will then deploy the Ariane 6. It is scheduled that the Ariane 6 will fly for the first time this year.
