WASHINGTON – Retired United States Army Colonel (US) Douglas Macgregor tells the narrative Russia lost in the war on Ukraine is a lie.

According to Macgregor, a former Pentagon adviser under Donald Trump’s administration, what actually happened was that Ukraine lost the war by losing around 400,000 military personnel in the fighting.

Macgregor’s comments were at odds with Western officials in the latest episode of Tucker Carlson’s show broadcast on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Kyiv does not publicly disclose official figures on the death toll during the war.

However, The New York Times last week quoted US officials as saying Ukraine had seen nearly 70,000 deaths during the war and an additional 100,000 to 120,000 injured. The media also put the toll in Russia at close to 300,000, including 120,000 deaths and 170,000 to 180,000 injuries.

Macgregor did not share further information regarding the figure of 400,000 Ukrainian military personnel who died.

“I think all the lies that have been told for over a year and a half about Ukraine prevailed—it’s just Ukraine, Russia is evil, Russia is incompetent—it all comes crashing down,” Macgregor told Carlson.

“And this thing is collapsing because what happened on the battlefield was horrific,” he said NewsweekWednesday (23/8/2023).
